Optical Sights for AR

I've used iron sights for many years, but my eyesight now requires an easier/quicker sighting system for my AR. Prefer something rugged and versatile that doesn't require batteries. Would like to hear from anyone who has actually used one of the new multirange recticle systems (Trijicon, etc) for hunting or in combat. Would a simple Aimpoint be better?

My first AR had an ACOG Reflex sight on it. It was great that it didn't require batteries but it was nearly impossible to see in bright light especially against a white background.

I now have a Russian Kobra sight which uses a watch battery but at least I can always pick it out no matter what I'm aiming at.

You might consider an illuminated low power scope, that way the battery is only used as a backup in low light conditions.

An EOTech that takes the double AA's are said to last forever and the Trijicon Docter red dot is said to be indestructable. I am going to go after one of the two.

I use the Trijicon Reflex non-magnified sight. I absolutely love it. It does have a washout problem with indoor flashlight use, but the new Reflexes come with a polarizer that adjusts the contrast.

I disagree that the AA's in an EOtech last forever....the highest end say 1,000 hours on one set of lithiums. The Aimpoint on the other hand is much closer to the forever claim. The ML2 lists 10,000 hours of battery life. That is over a year of being constantly on. The other Aimpoints that are a little higher in price are over 5 years of constant on. If you turn the switch off and only turn it one when you use it I bet you would go quite some time without ever running an aimpoint battery down.
