Well i finally picked up a 10/22, i had been toying with idea for a while, i got the only one Academy had in stock, the carbine, blued with hardwood stock, am looking for ideas and suggestions about a decent relatively low priced scope, suggested after market mags, 25 rd or even 50 rd, and thoughts on what to buy first for modding for performance. any ideas appreciated

Ive got Simmons 22 mag 4x32 scope its been a good one for squirrel hunting. (30 or 40 dollars) you probably want higher power for target shooting. my Simmons 3x9x42 is clear as a bell for $125
You can do these on the cheap with a little ingenuity and prudent shopping.
Try this:
or
A good string trimmer cleaning device for in the field or at the range.
I put together these kits for friends. Some with oversize pins and some without.
You can easily make your own extended mag release or modify the stock part. Your price range on scopes would help.
Trigger pull is one of the first mods you may want to do. A Volquartse hammer will normally make a great trigger out of it. $35-40 and you can do it. Just check to see which hammer your 10/22 came with. 1 piece or if it has separate bushings. CheapGunParts.Com this should let you see which hammer you have. <Ruger 10/22 help site> is a great site on how-to and part installation. You will see some other great ideas that you may want to consider?
Scope,, just for plinking, 4 or 6x fixed power might be ok,, for target or bench work you may want more power. Just look through a bunch and find what you like.
You can judiciously polish the sear, disconnector and pins and add a Power Custom Hammer Kit for a nice crisp 2.5lb pull. I find the Power Custom to be somewhat more crisp than the VQ and it's less expense at under $30.00
However, they both do the job. MidwayUSA - Power Custom Competition Hammer Ruger 10/22
Reworking the oem Ruger parts well give you the same if not better results on the trigger and mag release. There are several on line resources that well walk you through the mods. You can even make your own bolt buffer with a .50 drill bit and .25 of clear plastic tubing.

Timney just offered a complete drop in trigger group assembly for the 10/22 that became available at the begining of last month. bought one myself and it breaks crisp, clean and consistant at 2 1/2 pounds.
i just bought a new ruger 10 22 as well and have added mag release extention butler creek folding stock a rail for the scope rings and a butler creek 25 round steel liped mag.
when getting a magazine make sure to get the steel lipped mags they perform the best with rapid shooting wich is impossibe to not do when having fun plinking.

You may like a vari 1.5 x7 weaver scope is for rim fire but about 140.00 and just so much you can do to the rifle, if this is just a starter rifle and you plan to get others, like you said stay modest with the upgrades you can spend mucho moula on other thing....
Or... you can purchase a power custom hammer and sear..comes with springs and runs about 60 bucks. a little polishing to the surfaces and mine breaks clean everytime at 32oz. I did shim my trigger, sear and hammer. ( shimming is critical for consistent breaks.)
Watch out...glass bed a 10/22 receiver and she may crack on you. A stock receiver flexes normally during operation. Take the flex room away and you are just taking a chance that is not needed. Most experts will say to bed the barrel and float the receiver on a 10/22. The balance point of my barreld action allows me to float both and focus only on a solid fixed position for the locking lug. Tighten that lug to about 24 inch lbs. Then tweak while at the range to find the sweet spot...
