Bought a GP100

Got myself a new GP100 for my birthday, stainless, 4" barrel. I want to thank the forum for past recommendations that helped lead me to this choice. Fits my hand perfectly, built like a tank and a joy to shoot. It's my first pistol and I couldn't be happier with it.

So far I've run just 50 rounds of Magtech .38 Special 158gr lead round nose through her. Any ammo recommendations out there for target range practice ammo and some gravel pit plinking? And what's your favorite for home defense and/or hiking in bear country? (I spend a couple weeks every year in southwest Montana.) Between .38 Special and .357 magnum I'm seeing a ton of choices.

Thanks for any advice.

Congrats on the GP100. Great revolver.

Range and plinking ammo? Cheapest you can find in .38sp, .38sp+P, or .357 magnum works great. Fiocchi, MagTech, Blazer Brass, Blazer Aluminim, Speer, whatever.

Protection in the great outdoors? Solid point bullet only. .357 Magnum only.

Home protection? 125gr JHP. Speer Gold Dot. Remington Express. Federal. Many to choose from.

If you want the front sight to show up better, you can paint the face with cheap bright white fingernail polish. Apply sparingly for 3 or 4 coats, letting it dry a little between coats. If you want a color, still do the white and add the color over the top. Shows up WAY better.

For general plinking duty I buy the cheapest .38’s around. Sometimes that means LRN or wadcutters. For personal defense, I’d use what most of the police departments used in the hay day of the .357 as a service revolver: the 125 grn JHP or the 158 grn JHP. I’ve carried these myself . If you’re looking to defend against bear or take deer I’d look to the really heavy hitters the 180 grn - 200 grn solids from places like Grizzly Ammunition, Ammo, Bullets, Gun and Ammunition, Rifle Ammunition, Hand Gun Ammunition or Buffalo Bore Product Line Listing. Cool jaku. You're going to get many years of joy from your GP.
As far as ammo like the others said whatever you can get on the cheap side for plinking. I like the 125gr. JHP Gold Dot for HD.
