How much shotgun ammo to keep

I just recently started thinking about being ready for disaster, partially thanks to the economy, and partially after watching Jericho (Awesome series). Anyways, I bought my first gun recently, a Mossberg 500 Tactical Persueder, and have a Glock 26 on the way as soon as my permit goes though. I plan on keeping 500 rounds of JHP ammo for my Glock 26 and about 1k round of FMJ ammo.

How much is a good amount for my 12 gauge though? There are so many kinds of rounds and uses I'm not sure how much to store. My local wal mart has good prices on Winchester Super X 00 Buckshot and rifled slugs, $8 for 15 rounds. So how much of what types of rounds would you store?

I'd add some bird shot too for hunting small game.

It all depends on your funds. If you can afford a lot, buy alot!

To be prepared as andrew was stating must have moula... but the slugs if you need to gather meat from the field will do... and the 00 buckshot is going to get the attention of someone for sure.... but again the game loads at the w-world is something to consider to buy a nice volume of (have you ever shot a 1 gal milk jug with the game loads or know as andrew said birdshot you can get 100 game loads for 24.00 is a good deal and give you the ammo to get the job done... It will not matter to the one getting shot at unless your shooting through a car door or a wall in the home. The game loads send the same message YOUR IN THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME BUD!!!! By the way if it comes to that they'll know they selected the wrong victim to pick on .....cuz your not the victim after all

... at home (shelter #1) keep all you want. Keep 7.5 shot or so (suggestions from hunters) for game, slugs for deer, and OO buck for the two legged kind. Keep in mind that you really don't want more than you can carry IF you have to start moving around. That being said, there are other options...

... another thought is this ... IF you have a 2nd location to "shelter" ... maybe you should pre-position ammunition supplies there too. This may also be an advantageous situation since shotgun ammunition is bulky ...

... regarding all ammunition(s) you would need, keep a "bug-out" bag of that ammunition & supplies for travel and attempt to pre-position the rest. You certainly will not be able to keep it all ... and will not want to leave it behind.

I have enough to keep me prepared. I wont share how much because theres people that dont like that and think that we should be limited to how much ammo to have.

Honestly speaking, it depends on what other guns you might depend on in an emergency and whether the shotgun is your first choice. I personally keep a few assorted boxes of shotgun shells availalbe, but I lean toward other weapons in an emergency. So it is a matter of how long you believe you will need the ammo. I think something like 5-shots per day would not be an unreasonable amount... that would be 150 rounds for a month or 6 boxes.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think it's clear that I have alot of rounds to buy in the future. Now if only I could find a good source for 9mm JHP ammo I would be set...until I get myself a good rifle.

... which is why I will not divulge the all the types of weaponry and amounts of ammo I have on here either. Trust is earned, not blindly given.

I'm not really worried about marshal law as much as I am banning of the purchase of ammo. If we ever went off a monetary standard for some reason (economic collapse, Jerhico type situation) then I think ammo would be one of the most valuable/useful items to own.

Also, I think I'm about the only person buying up these 15 packs of Winchester Super X shells at my local wal mart. I usually dont see a change in their stock from week to week when I go buy to pick up a few packs. Now their 9mm on the other hand... I can't find any anywhere around here.

I'm one of these people that is working on stocking up currently, mostly doing this with reloading, but for slugs and .22, don't have the stuff to reload those. Shotgun I'm working on getting around 1000 slugs, and about 3000 small game loads. for the .22 I want to have in the neighborhood of 10k rounds for those. Then all my larger bore stuff (.32acp - 30-06) I'm trying to load up at least 1000 of each. I look at it this way, .22 is for putting food on the table, and everything larger is for defending what I have.

Dronac,
Since at the present time Mossberg is your primary weapon make sure to feed it that way. The 12ga shotgun is one of the most versital survival weapons you could have picked. My personal choice for a anti personal load is the slug. I know that there are draw backs to using these and compensate for them. Keep a wide selection of ammo types and buy as often as budget allows. Also consider dessicant for long term storage.

... you actually believe that the National Guard will turn on the people that they call their family & friends for corrupt politicians?

... as a military member, you should know better.
