Where to buy ammo in SW Riverside county?

I'm curious if anyone has any suggestion as to where to buy handgun ammo in southwest Riverside county, or even North San Diego county? Do the Walmarts in California carry ammo?
I called a place called "The Shootist" in Murrieta, and the guy that answered the phone was a jerk when I asked him a couple of things, so I'm thinking I won't be giving him my business. I've been considering mail order, but the shipping charges are pretty high.
Thanks for your help!

I dont really know Riverside county very well at all, there has got to be at least a couple mom & pop type gun shops in the Inland Empire. I can recomend places in LA or OC if you want to make the trip.

There is a gunshow in Glendale ( just N. of L.A city) this weekend, and a much bigger gun show in Costa mesa in a few weeks.

Most Wallmarts in So-Cal sell ammo, there is also a Sporting goods chain called Big 5 that should have a location somewhere near you. I will warn you that Big 5 only stocks target / plinking type ammo so if you are looking for serious self defense ammo (ie: hollowpoints) you will need to find a real gun shop.

Check out the forum calguns.net . There will be members there that live in your area and will give you much better answers.

Sorry I didn't notice this earlier.

Yes, Walmarts carry ammo, and they should have pretty much anything you're likely to want. There's also the Shootist in Temecula; BJ Sporting Goods in Hemet; Turner's in Riverside and San Bernardino; Centerfire Arms in Riverside.

Don't write off the Shootist; I go in there a lot. Their prices aren't always the best on ammo, but they do have it. They have a large inventory, and everything's laid out nicely for drooling and looky-looing, which they don't discourage. They're flexible a lot of the time on the firearms they sell, and honest on trade-ins.

I've never had anyone there come off as a jerk, but then I've never dealt with them on the phone, either. Maybe the one you got was busy, or just having a bad day.

I've found that the largest supply of pistol and rifle ammo so far since the big crunch has been at Bass Pro Shops in Rancho Cucamonga. Might be a little far for you in south county but worth it if youre in the area. Yes Wal Mart does sell pistol ammo but you have to rely on timing. Each store might have a different receiving day or night. Check with the clerk at your store to see when their shipment comes in and be there when it does. The same applies for Big 5 Sporting goods. I'm not sure about the shipping charges but a friend of mine had no problem getting his pistol ammo through Cabela's. Good luck.

I know it's a drive but Southern California Gun in San Diego (fairly near I-15) has a large supply of ammo (I was there yesterday)....lots of 9mm, and plenty of 380 (9 and 380 in American Eagle)...he said the 45 is a bit tough right now...they are on Google if you are interested. Locals here seem to be pretty well stocked but Wally World is a big bust. I think the one fairly near me has some funny business going on...Not that I don't trust the clerks...not much.

I bought ammo from both Natchez and Cabellas when it was tighter and if you buy a decent quantity the prices and freight are not unreasonable...Recently bought 9mm A/E from Natchez at about $16 which is sure higher than a year or so ago but not the $30 some are trying to get...Got 38Special +P Gold Dot from Cabellas at $24 or $25 which seemed ok for what it is...... I used to deal with Midway but have not been going there due to freight hassles and some "extra" costs. Many of the internet ammo dealers "followed" the shortages right up with prices but some, like Natchez and Cabellas may have upped them a little bit but don't seem to be trying to rip anyone off.

I waited 8 months and spent $3300.00 for a .300 Win Mag custom tactical rifle to be built from the Shootist in Murrieta. Randy (the owner) and his staff was most helpful, professional and courtesous. Since, I've dealt with them on the phone as well as in person many times and have NEVER been treated rudely. As far as the rifle they provided, I am very happy with it. I can only imagine the reason why said person was rude to you on the phone....he could've been having a very bad and busy day or perhaps he was a 'new guy', in which case he's likely been terminated on account of his poor attitude towards customer service.
The Shootist is a very reputable store, has a large assortment of weapons on hand, are quite knowledgeable and a large supply of ammo. The ammo is a bit overpriced and I obtain my ammo from other sources. I suggest trying the Shootist again,...ask for 'Randy' (the owner...usually out on business)...the gunsmith 'Ray'...or Patrick (retail).
Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies! The problem ended up being solved in a more extreme manner. We actually ended up moving from California, to Juneau, Alaska....Not for ammo...for work The local gun shop is pretty great, and what's really cool, is to go in the Walmart, or Fred Meyer, and see hand guns for sale in the display cases.
