Talking You ever think of buying a new gun just for ammo availability?

I was in Wally world yesterday and today, and I realized that I may just have to get a pistol or carbine in .40S&W, just because of all the ammo available for it. Also, I've noticed that .243, .308, .30-30, and .22-250 ammo is almost always in stock in sufficient quantities. All the 'ready' ammo is gone; (.223, 7.62X39, etc), so I might be thinking about changing my tactics for ammo storage as well as what guns I want to have.

I might just be making a few purchases here soon. Going to keep my .22's though...

No, I wouldnt want to change guns or buy an off the wall caliber, because in the long run or an extreme shtf senerio ammo availability for that off cal. will be non-existent.

Since there are other guns I want to buy now and in the future, I couldn't buy a gun due to ammo availabilty.

BUT if times were to get even worst I could see me buying a gun due to ammo availability for personal and home protection.

I bought Ruger 22's to have good hunting pistols for small game, and because the ammo is cheap and available.

Hey it sounds like you have a good excuse to get a new gun(s). I always like having good reasons to get a new one.

Unhappy

Glad to hear some-ones local wal-mart has ammo on the shelf, mine does not. How-ever I bought a 9mm, because of the amount of ammo in stock and the price, when compared to .45 ACP.

yes, i bought an AK-74 because of the ammo prices several years ago. pistols are all in standard calibers, but i do buy more ammo depending on whats on sale, so it was .45 then 9mm, now its .40. i keep a good supply of my SD ammo no matter the price.

Not particularly concerned about it. If you have "some" it should be enough until production catches up with demand. Until then, I would expect prices to keep going up. If there was a war, there will be plenty of the military guns and calibers around and I'm not expecting any war on US soil. If you can't find guns and ammo then, well, you probably don't need it.

Plus under a disaster scenario, you are liable of getting yourself shot if you are too aggressive. Stay home and protect the nest. If everyone did that, there would be little disorder.

Actually, this is

a better idea than you might think. It is one reason to stay away from older calibers not stocked in most gunshops and newer calibers that just may not make it.

Local PD, Border Patrol, US Forest Service, Park Rangers, Fish & Game Etc all are using .40 S&W and .223. 12 guage

Military is using 9mm, .223, 7.62 (308),12 guage

Military base Security Contractors are using .40 S&W, 9MM, in my area.

If SHTF and you don't reload where do you supposed your going to find ammo to fit your weapons and what weapons caliber should you purchase?

I bought the four basic guns. 12 GA, .223, .308, and .45. I bought them especially for ammo availability, but things have changed. I'm glad that I don't have a odd wildcat caliber.

Beans my son is a Park Ranger and they just switched from 40 S&W to 45 caliber Glocks and I'm pretty sure other departments will across the nation.

With crime and gangs and all other bad the 45 is prolly comeing back...A.H

A few years back I bought my .30-30 rifles partly because I kept seeing the ammo in the stores, and the brass in large amounts at the range. I had been collecting the brass, then decided I better have a rifle to use it in!
ANY place stocking ammo will have the Thutty-thutty. Ditto for .243Win. The Tacticool boys won't be interested in it.
It'll kill a varmint just as dead as any wonder-caliber.

Ammo availability is one of the main reasons I own guns chambered in so many calibers. I can shoot whichever is available.

if the world ended because of zombies.
all the regular calibers would already be taken from the looted stores.
nobody wants the .454casull or some of the other oddball ones that my local stores always seem to have 1 or 2 boxes of.....
