Exclamation Weird shot patteren

what would cause my .22 to hit center 1 shot then the the second and third shot hit high left. i was shooting off the bench at about 25 yards and it happened all three times when i went and tried to shot a 3 shot group and it looked as if i would have purposely shot 2 really nice groups. its really confusing me

Check all screws & make sure they are secure. Use Loctite.

Check tightness of scope mounting.

Check crown of barrel for scratches/gouges.

What kind of ammo are you using? I use the best, in my opinion, when I sight anything in. Your problems were similiar to mine. I was using Remington Thunder-duds on three .22'a and could not zero any of them. There were shots high, left, right, and whatever. Each shot sounded different, like there was not enough powder, or too much. I took all three guns out the following week and used CCI mini-mags, and they all shoot great, held zero, etc.

I advise trying some other ammo with same bullet weight and design and seeing if there is a change and how much.Am having my own problems and it is raining so I can't really play around.I bought some Win. 36gr hp,s with wax buffer and they look good and shoot good for 3to4 shots and then throw a flyer either high or low about two in.,s and then go right back to center.I need to get the chrony out but it's raining.I shot some federal bulk bullets in 36gr hp and copper buffer and they are shooting great except a little to the right and high without adjusting sight.I am using a Marlin M780 with a BSA 4x16x40mm at 50yds.You might call it the battle of the basement bargains.I have some Rem.,s in same type I will try when it dries up.I am grouping around an 1" at 50ydswith 5shot groups. Not bad in my estimate if I can get the flyer out.The Win,s sound better than the fed,s, (more consistent) and look good as to bullet shape.Maybe the chroney will tell me something. sam.

I shoot the federal bulk. The bad bullets fall about two inches low at 50yrds. You can generally tell, the heads on the duds almost always have a lot of wiggle due to a bad crimp seal.
Do you clean your bore between groups? The barrel shoots more consistent with a couples of fouling shots.

I havn't cleaned the bore on mine in I don't know when.I do have a M60 that seems to throw good groups with about anything. That was open sight.I just stuck a 3x9 on it.Don't know how it will do.Some believe in cleaning .22,s but with all the buffering I don't very often.LeftyO will read this and give me hell. sam.

Start over!
Clean the bejeesis out of it.
Use a good, consistent (not necessarily target) ammo like CCI Mini Mags
Check integrity of the scope/mount engagement.
Check stock screw for proper tightness
Use a solid rest.
Burn the first round after the cleaning.
Fire five round groups.
Then draw some conclusions

It turned out that it was just the shells i bought some Remington thunderbolts and it went back to less than an inch group so i guess im not shooting federal ammunition in it any more

Alot of people swear by the Federals. Me, I hate the Remingtons..I use CCI.. Shoot what you're gun likes.. It appears it like the Rem's.. Why fight it...

Bad Trigger pull, bad breathing, (same here, one dead on the rest high left,) pulled off the scope and shot with iron sights @ 50yds, i got one & a half inch groups kneeling, one inch prone,

Is the weapon an auto-loader? If so I'd guess that it is the first round, being hand chambered is having the hammer finish closing the bolt all of the way. The remaining rounds are fully chambered and teh bolt is in full battery forward.

To check this out. next time out at the range, fire one "looser round" into the back-stop and then shift to firing at the target for three to five rounds.
