I would check with whomever it is in the state in question that enforces the gun laws.
I wouldn't take the advice from anyone, not even mine, lol, without first confirming it. It's your gun rights, guns and freedom that will be lost/forfitted, not the one that gave you the bad advice you chose ti listen to...
You can also try here. Just click on the state in question. And even with this, confirm what you read...
In Colorado, if you can legally own a handgun, you can legally carry it loaded in your car for self-defense without a permit. You can also carry loaded long guns, but the chamber has to be empty on those.

NRA/ILA "It is unlawful to carry a firearm concealed on or about one’s person without a permit, except for a person in his or her own dwelling, place of business, or on property owned or controlled by him or her. A permit is not required to carry a handgun where carrying firearms is legal, if the handgun is not concealed. A handgun is not considered concealed if it is in the possession of a person who is in a private automobile or other private means of conveyance who is carrying it for a legal use, or the handgun is in the possession of a person who is legally engaged in hunting activities within the state. "
Thanks
Wyoming however is really vague
You can carry the firearm in your car, in the glove box, its considered the same as a closet in your home. If stopped, and you carry any info, such as your registration and proof of insurance in said glove box, tell the trooper "before" you open glove box that its in there, so it doesn't look like you're trying anything funny. Might try carrying it on the dashboard of vehicle also, when traveling, that way its in plain sight and noticed first thing if, and when stopped.
The regulations/laws governing rifles & shotguns in a vehicle are State Fish & Game law. Not permitted to have a round in the chamber, no other restrictions.
This is intended as a deterrent to poaching.
You can have a pistol stuck in your belt under your coat IN your vehicle and you are legal. When you step out of your car, you had better have a CC permit or leave it in the vehicle.
Laying a hand gun on the dash is NOT a good idea under any cirmcumstances! If you are stopped, yes it is in plain sight, But it is also quick to get to with your hands on the stearing wheel. Would make the officer more uncomfortable than laying in the seat beside you and your hands on the wheel.

I kept it in the console of the surburban, put in my coat pocket to carry it to the motel room and back to the car, didn't give any patrolman any reasons to stop me and made the trip OK. We went through Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and New Mexico
Thanks for all the information, and I would never put a weapon of any kind on the dash of my vehicle.
