i think that you would have to have a semi truck to haul everything that the guy wants to take out with him. i think that a bug out bag should be just that a BAG not three truck loads LOL all of that should be in your safe area not in your bag

Sorry I posted that website. I thought maybe it might be of some help. Nowhere does it say you should take EVERYTHING. It's just a list to give you a idea. I take it that you havent been through the hell We here in Louisiana have been (and still are going ) through. I live about 4 miles from where the levee breached when Katrina hit. I live about 15 Minutes from Downtown (Canal St.) in New Orleans. I wasnt one who sat on my ass waiting for the Gov. to rescue my ass. I had some stuff, but after NOT being able to come back to my house for a Month and a half, I realized just how important it is to be ready. Ive made check off list and everything I could think of so that next time I have to leave EVERYTHING Ive ever owned, at leaste I would have something. In response to your smart ass quote about having all the simi trucks to haul it, If I could have gotten the trucks, I would havent lost all the Sh-t that I did. See, I wasnt watching the live reports of Katrina on TV, or reading about it in the paper over a nice warm cup of coffee....I was LIVING IT. It's been 3.5 years and I (WE ) STILL havent recovered the ordeal, both mental and $$$. So before you go making wise cracks, you might want to stop and think, because Something COULD happen to YOU and your family. I was just trying to be helpful . Dont worry, the jokes on me. I made a ass of myself by posting that. I wont be making another post like that again.

Hey now !! Take it easy ron !! No one's making wise cracks at you. Remember, SHTF means different things to different people. I am sorry that you lost it all in Katrina, and hope you are well on your way to recovery. Thanks for the link !! I have my gear broken down To A, B, and C Bags. Depending on wether or not I can take my vehicle depends which bags go.

Thumbs up

Sorry for the flippant response earlier.
Any BOB loadout must take into account the person's health and fitness too. A strapping young man in his prime can carry an 80-pound pack a goodly ways. Me, with a 52-year old bad back - no way! I do NOT intend to BO unless by vehicle - walking any great distance heavily loaded is simply NOT going to happen.
Another thing that can help is having a good 'team' to spread the load.
One person can carry that fully equipped Med Kit - preferably if they have medical training.
One member of a close couple can carry the tent. The other can carry more food.
On a hike, I carry a couple canteens and a steel canteen cup - no need for a mess kit! Especially using MH meal pouches. I tend towards the 'minimalist' approach. Keeps the weight down.
Several items on that list were quite simply not necessary.

It's all good, and Im sorry I blew my lid. It's just that Ive been really having a hard time first dealing with Katrina, and then a bad car wreck that screwed up my back. Im 50 years old, and I just dont know how much more I can take . I was wrong for popping off like I did. I just DONT want ANYONE to have to go through what Ive been dealing with, and if I see something I think can help others avoid it , I try to share it with them. Again..Im sorry.

That is a good list ron70062. We barely dodged Ike, it went east of us, and that's when i make my bags. Thanks for keeping us reminded to be vigilant on that subject.

It was a very thorough list, but the one thing that I think was absolutely unnecessary was the rappelling/climbing gear. Seriously, if the SHTF, I won't plan on climbing El Capitan.

Seems to be a very thorough list that's for sure. I'm not sure I could carry it all by myself in one bag if I had to bug out on my own. Sure not if I had to also, which I would, carry firearms and ammo for same.

I think I'd try and get as much on the list as possible, based on emergency use then necessity and if any room left, then want.

Thanks for linking it Ron70062, I have both printed and saved it to my documents.

Another consideration, and one that hit many Katrina evacuees, is the issue of pets. Many had to leave Fido and Fluffy behind to fend for themselves as best they could. Some tried to take pets, but had no room or couldn't take them into a shelter.
If one is going to BO with a pet, then the animal's travel comfort must be considered - is there room in the car/truck for it? Have you packed food and other necessities for it? Any medications needed?
Children also have special needs. Ditto any elderly or ill folks.

good list ron, personaly if my vehicle was running at a "shtf" time then i would have most of that stuff with me... but if my vehicle does not work i would need to pack in one bag per person in my family and we would need to walk or bike it out... but good list non-the-least.

Vehicles are fine to load SHTF situation, but if looking long term or even short term if power out or many people leaving that if you don't have enough gas to get where you are going, you may not be able to fuel up again. May have to leave car and lots of gear behind at some point.

I would tend to put everything that you need in a seperate pack. We have LG backpacking packs for absolute items, the rest would be loaded as expendables in seperate bags. I prefer internal frame packs I have a Lowe Alpine, but have both, the wifes is my old external Kelty that she likes since the frame is so adjustable to fit her well and the webbing keeps the pack off direct contact with her body. Between us we can carry everything we absolutely need and room for a few comforts too.

My stepdaughter will use my old sandpiper bug out pack from the Army days... she could care less right now, but if SHTF she would be ok! LOL It would be fine to carry her essentials and can carry quite a bit considering her small size without overburdening her.

That is a good site listing of stuff though... kudos

Thanks for passing on the bug-out-bag info...

...and, it's good to compare notes on what's helpful to have in a bug-out-kit.
