I heard from a few State Police officers that our Governor has un-officially instructed them to slow down Handgun permit applications. I have talked to many people in the local gun shops and from the sound of things it appears to be true.
One guy told me they sat on his permits for 2 months. When he finally got them he only had 30 days to purchase. That is downright criminal. If only we could prove this then we could stick it to Corzine.
I'm seriously thinking of leaving this state. We are run by a bunch of criminals who only care about their personal adgendas.
I believe it is state law the town issueing the permit has 30 days to approve or deny it. Here's what I found:
2C:58-3(f). Purchase of firearms
"...the licensing authority who shall investigate the same and, unless good cause for the denial thereof appears, shall grant the permit or the identification card, or both, if application has been made therefor, within 30 days from the date of receipt of the application for residents of this State and within 45 days for nonresident applicants. A permit to purchase a handgun shall be valid for a period of 90 days from the date of issuance and may be renewed by the issuing authority for good cause for an additional 90 days.
If what your saying is true and this website is true than they are breaking the law. But maybe since Corzine is doing such a great job running the state we could overlook this one.
Are you talking about a CCW permit, or a permit to purchase/own a pistol? I didn't know that you had to have permission from your state government to own/purchase one if you were not prohibited otherwise. No wonder you want to leave the state.
You need a firearms ID card to possess any firearm. It also allows you to buy long guns including out of state.
To buy a hand gun you need a purchase permit for each gun you are buying. The permit is only good for 90 days but can be extended for another 90. The problem is the process to obtain the permit takes a long time. As I said before I haven't heard of it taking less than 2 months and alot longer in some cases.
mental health check now, thank GOD i got out of there. during my time in NJ i bought 2 handguns. jerked around, sitting on the permit to buy, 1st permit took 6 months of waiting, finally i contacted my state representative at the time and he got the permit going. the police chief, was all cranky about that!!!
now since being here i gots more handguns than i could ever hope for in NJ.

The last time I went for a handgun permit I had to get a mental health check. The lady at town hall said it is only good for 6 months. If you only purchase long guns than you only need to do it when you get your Firearms ID card. But if you purchase 2 pistols in a year more than 6 months apart, from what I understand, you need to get the mental health check twice. Unless my town is jerking me around.
Well I still live in this paradise and there is some misinformation going on around here. First of all the buying 90 day period is after the issuance of the permits that are signed by the chief. The 90 days does not start until the chief signs it and it is dated when he does. I agree it takes a while from the State Police at times to get to the local authority, but that does not affect your buying time. Even if the chief sits on it, he can't sit on it forever. Suppose he sits on it for 90 days, are you telling me you will have no time to buy a gun? Does not make sense in the least, nor is it legal.
Second part. If you have a Firearms ID it is good forever (or until you change your address) to buy long guns. This is the only card you need even in our gun lovin' state.
Now here's what happened to me. If you have not bought a handgun in years, you will need another background check. No fingerprints, just the background check. Now if you start buying guns on an infrequent basis, it is up to the local authority's discretion whether and if another check is needed. Also the mental health check is part of the background check. Hope this helps.

I know 2 people who recently got permits from the State Police where this is not the case. I saw the permits with my own eyes and I can tell you they were signed and dated weeks and in 1 case 2 months before they were picked up. I agree its not legal but who is going to fight it? I can't afford to.

Where I live we don't have a local PD. So we need to go to the State Police for permits and no matter how often you get purchase permits they will do the mental health and background checks.
You only need to be fingerprinted when you get the FID card. My friend hadn't bought a handgun it 15+ years and he didn't need to get fingerprinted to get his latest permits.
