Excluding the Barrett .50 what is the most accurate rifle out to 500 yards, Strictly target shooting in friendly competition with 5 or 6 of my friends. I have a .223 bolt action and a Model 70 Winchester in 30-06 caliber?
I would say both the .223 and the 30.06 are capable of great accuracy to 500 yards and beyond as long as you do your part and your gun likes the loads you are shooting. The U.S. military shoot both .223 and 7.62 out to 500 meters and beyond on a regular basis. Which ever one you feel comfortable with will work!!
If it is strictly for targets I would go for a speed demon. 22-250, .243, 25-06. Lazer beam stuff. If you want to impress them goe for the Weatherby accumarc in .30-.378. Of course all the work has already been done on the .308 so there is a good choice. My reasoning behind the smaller faster calibers is the lack of recoil combined with the speed.

Doc
Hi Doc
Forgive me, but there are so many ways to answer this. For me personally, I would like more info on what you are really looking for?
And then there are many levels of accuracy.
First I see what rifle make, with chamberings thrown in a long side calibers. There are inherently accurate rifles, rounds, as well calibers.
If you are looking for a production rifle for target work, my choice would be a Rem. 40X, with perhaps a Kimber Tactical second.
I consider 500 yds. on the short side of long range target work. Be that as it may, there are excellent bullets for accuracy in .22, 6mm, 6.5 mm, 7mm, .30 and above. My choice would be the either 6mm or 6.5, but wouldn't rule out the 7 or 30 nor the .22. As for chambering, you are left to what the production rifles come in. One reason I picked the 40X, as it is semi custom so to speak, and may have alil more latitude in chambering choices, as it is meant as a target rifle. And I like the solid bottom receiver of the single shot.
But in short, there any number of factory rifles out there that can be very accurate to and beyond 500 yds. If you are looking for .25 moa or less accuracy, you are looking pretty much at specialized custom rigs.
i shoot my 7 ackley and 25-06 in the wed night friendly competitions just fine.
the guy's i shoot with shoot 6br's ,243 ackley's, cooper sumthin's etc..
my winchester and ruger don't embarass me at all and i sometimes win.
i just stuck a higher powered scope on them and went and shot them.
if you ain't shooting for enough money to buy/ pay for the newer equipment then why buy it?
plus i can put the 3x9 back on them and take mine hunting.
.416 round designed for ultra long range accuracy. This is a monster
sized round and will be very expensive but it will do it for those wanting
the power and range and accuracy at great distance.
The only rifle I ever shot past 200 meters was my M1 Garand in High Power Matches. That was 200 slow fire standing, 300 sitting rapid fire, and 600 prone slow fire. It would hold minute of angle or less all day and is a hoot to shoot, all shooting was done with iron sights too! Of course it wasnt equiped with the as-issued barrel anymore, along with a few other items. That was in 30-06, with hand loads and VLD & Match King bullets.
there are dozens of cartridges and rifles capable of shooting very small groups at 500yds. what to recommend would depend entirely on exactly what kind of target shooting you want to do.
Maybe I am wrong about your question but I take it you are asking about the difference in accuracy between your .223rem and your .30-06.If this is the case, using traditional bullet weights of 168gr and 55gr it is going to be very close with (in my opinion) the heavier bullet having the advantage.Trajectory on both is very close. For outdoor shooting I would choose the .30-06 in 168gr match bullets, but you may be surprised as to what some may do with their little pop shooters.By the way,(I by no means consider 500yds as medium range,I don't consider 100yds as real short range.) sam.
I too wondered if you thinking of using either the .223 or 30-06 you have. If that is the case, you didnt mention the make and model of the .223. Also, do you happen to know the twist rate of your .223?
Stick with what you got and shoot, shoot, shoot !!
+1
I got a Tikka in .308 and I am going for the 600yd mark. I will post reports when I do. In your case though, I think the .223 is sufficient for that range with good results.

Your 30/06 (and many other ctgs.) with the proper bullets and loads will be more accurate at 500 yds. than the .50 BMG. Beyond 1000 yds. things begin to change.
