I'm not a "die hard" survivalist who assumes only he and his family are left and everyone is dead (or soon will be). My "survival" preparation begins with matches (or a magnifying glass). If you can't start a fire, you're just one more of the "soon will be's".

Second on my list is my trout rod.

Third, is a hunting knife. You better be able to cut what you eat.

Fourth, comes a way to shoot birds - either by shotgun in the air or .22 on the ground. My first choice is the .22. The second is a shotgun.

But I'd like to have both (and do).

Self Defense only comes in fifth - a pistol. It could also be a .22. The only time you can't get by with a .22 is when what you're shooting at is shooting back.

Sam, I totally agree on packing a .22 for survival. You can carry lots of bullets and keep the noise down.

Having larger rifles and shotguns would be great for when you need them but the .22 would be my first choice in most situations.

we all should become more aware of the risk and thoughts of keeping our family protected.
