EM burst-How do you prepare?

Fox News had a feature on an EM burst from the sun that could disable much of the electrical systems in western society. This includes vehicles and so forth. This would truly bring civilization to a standstill as we know it today for a period of time.

I suppose a nuclear bomb being detonated above a city would have the same effect, but would be much more local or regional at worst. Or would the entire electrical grid be stressed and go down?

So, how do you prepare for such a survival scenario? How long would it be reasonable to expect that electrical service would be unavailable? Would things like chain saws or portable generators work?

What we seem to lack is a true

timeline on the last big solar storm. That is, did the preceeding one come one hundred years or perhaps one million years earlier?

Yes, it could happen as I write this post where is the basis for prediction.

Buy a Tinfoil hat. It will help keep the government mind control beams (and EM bursts) from damaging your head! I've got one, it works great, the voices no longer speak to me.

Yeah, that feature may be safely disregarded. Coronal mass ejections happen all the time. When they hit the Earth, the result is aurora, not EMP.

With gama ray bursts, solar storms, asteroids, and inumerable other universe events that occur every second of every day throughout the known universe, its only a matter of time until one effects the earth. Just because it hasn't impacted earth in the last few million years means nothing. a few million years is an insignificant period of time in the universe. the period in which man has emerged as the dominant living thing on earth??... not even a blink of an eye to the universe.

My point is.... lol there is no sense worrying about it. if it happens, there is nothing we can do to stop it.

it has happened in the past and may happen in the future.

NASA - Carrington Super Flare

i referenced the Fox story in the Powder Keg. a scientist they spoke with said indications are that the sun is working up to another super flare. he also mentioned a 2012 time frame, the year many say will be the year of SHTF. i cannot wait for B.O.'s reaction to that one

Oh I'm not saying it hasn't or won't happen. I'm saying it absolutely WILL happen at some point. I'm also just saying that there really isn't anything you can do about it, so whats the point trying to prepare?

Even if you have your house protected and your car and you somehow aren't immediately effected by it, within days you will be in the same boat as everyone else. Electricity will stop flowing, fuel will stop being produced, there will be no TV radio or internet so your electronics will be useless anyway, nationwide supply will deplete quickly and welcome to Zombieville.

I think its just more intelligent to have a general survival plan for food, water, shelter, protection for you and your family just as you would in any survival scenario. If you have the only tv and the only computer that still operates, its kinda pointless. Most survival scenarios deal with living without electricity and being self sufficient. The same will serve you best after an EMP burst.

I rather expect the damaging effects will be sporadic, and temporary. Sure, power outages will occur - so our basic preparations will be sufficient. This will NOT end civilization as we know it.
If you are worried about possible EMP effect, it's pretty easy to build a basic Faraday cage. Put a radio and spare set of Electronic Ignition parts for your cars away, and sleep easy.

The super flare world tax will keep it away. If you have a metal building install a nice copper ground rod and ground the metal frame of the building. Remember all those chains dangling from dad's pickup in the cold war days?

If the world, especially the U.S. as we know it, survives until Dec 21st, 2012, I'll be surprised. With the idiots we have running things both here and abroad? very slim odds. LoL

When I was in the Air Force the Radio and Radar equipment repair shops were lined with copper screening to keep signals within the building.

Seems to me you could store your electrical survival gear in a shed that was lined with copper screen.

I'll bet a tin roof or metal siding would also do the trick. Just screen the windows.

Could you expound on this? I'm too young to know about the chains on dad's truck.

From what I've heard on the educational chanel, we should have to problem since the earths magnetic field protects us. However if the flare occurs when the poles flip (like the scientists are prodicting), we are literaly toast. No tinfoil or copper will protect us, the solar winds will burn off our oxygen.
