savage 99 reassembly

How do you assemble the brass rotary magazine on an older 99? And who has parts for them?

So you still have the correct rotor then?

What caliber is it in?

Ya, they're hard to do if you've never done one before. Not so much putting it back together but to get the spring tension correct so it will feed right.

I sent it out to be reblued and after 6 months i got it back in parts. Company is out of business, I am lucky to get it back at all. The caliber is 30/30 was my wife's grandfather's and I am trying to get it back into shape for my kids. Looking at the diagram I am only missing two small springs and the carrier spindle support I think. It seems to be a great design simple yet innovative considering the age.

I could have sworn I had one here but I can't find one in the parts box anywhere. I'm wondering if I'm leaving them in the recievers when I strip them? I'll have a looksie and see if they're still in there. Numrichs sells them for under $3 though, same with the springs.

I've got step by step insructions here on how to put your carrier back in but p.m. me with your email address cause it's a real large file.

Savage 99 carrier adjustment

I recently bought a Savage 99 Takedown (1926) model in 250-Savage. The rifle is in great shape. The barrel appears to be permanently fixed in the receiver. No real diasppointment there. There are no signs of swaging or brazing but it does not just twist off. I have another 99 TD (1918) that is unaltererd but the barrel is a little loose. My problem with this most recently acquired one is the carrier is out of adjustment. The round counter indicator is off and it fails to feed properly. I read in a response from "Mad Dog" that he was familiar with and could send instructions on properly adjusting the carrier assembly. So, "Mad Dog" I would sincerely appreciate your assistance. I bought this 99 to be a hunter not a cabinet queen. I don't want to tear down my other rotary magazine 99 just figure this one out but I can possibly look at parts of the assembly. If there are any other readers that can hepl me, I would really appreciate it.

Savage 99 carrier spool adjustment

Can anyone advise me with the best way to adjust the rotary magazine carrier assembly on a 99 Takedown in 250 Savage.
I bought this rifle recently. The barrel appears to be permanently fixed into the receiver. It is very tight and cannot be removed by hand. This job has been very nicely done. I bought the rifle as a hunter/occassional shooter so the barrel removal is not much concern. The magazine carrier spool does not properly index the cartridges and the cartridge counter is off. The "0" is centered in the window when empty. I find this a little odd unless it mechanically bottoms out against a stop when empty. Thank you for any assistance or advice you may have.

The cartridges does not index exactly when just loading them, the bolt has to be closed to be exact. Are the cartridge cycling properly? The only real adjustment is spring tension which which will affect either the number that you can load (too tight) or the last one not coming up (too loose). The other issue I did have with one that never indexed properly was that the rifle had been rebarrlled to a different caliber and the interenals were not match to the caliber. Maybe you have a larger cartridge rotor in your receiver? I have only taken apart 22 hp, 30-30 and 303 sav. The 22 hp was marked 22hp and the other two were both 303 sav. So I can't tell you if the 250-3000 would be marked as that. You could send to the savage historian for a letter to find out if that receiver was originally a 250-3000.

Savage 99 and re: 99trix

Thank you for your response. I have had this rifle one week. It is in great shape but I suspect the barrel and receiver were not an original match.
I have two other 99s one of which is a takedown in .250 Sav. I will start a better process of troubleshooting and making adjustments. I will also follow your advice and find out what it was originally manufactured as.
Any ideas where I may locate a carrier in .250?
Thank you.
