I found it difficult to see my sights when shooting my rifle at wooded areas or dark surfaces. So I just started shooting left handed with my rifles to get used to it when needed.
I have had no problems with my pistol since I am able to use my left eye while shooting right handed.
I am the same, right handed shooter with left eye dominance. I've adjusted to it and couldn't imagine shooting any other way to be honest with you.
Other then suggesting to you to keep practicing and working at it.
Other then that, if you really want to use your right eye, and get it to the point to where it doesn't feel awkward, it will take even more practice and working at it and I also strongly suggest getting and using an eye patch to cover the left eye. Good luck.

My 12y.o. grandson is the same way. he was leaning waaaay over to the right to sight rifles, and having a hard time of it. I convinced him to try shooting left-handed, and he does great now!
I've read that pistol shooters with this issue have good luck shooting it right-handed, but just canting the pistol to the left some, kinda like "half-gangsta". Some say this works well for them.

Thanks for all the tips! I'm going to try the slightly-gangsta angle and see if that helps. Just sighting it with a slight angle seems to align my eye correctly vs. a squared-up stance.
Edit:
The eye patch is a possibility. The eye doctor noted the same thing last time I went to see him; that I might need a patch over the left eye to strengthen the right one. I guess it might be time to finally do the deed.
Doesn't help that I have astigmatisim and in addition also nearsighted... sucks to be human.
I haven't had the problem when shooting firearms but I have in the past encountered it while trying to teach archery. It is far easier to teach someone to shood oposite handed than to deal with the eye dominance. Regardless of what you try they will revert to the dominate eye. Haven't really tried the patch but since a lot of us have firearms for self protection it seems that in an emergency situation you would have way too much on your plate to be trying to concentrate on which eye is engaged. Just my 2 cents.
cabelas sells shooting glasses for us old farts specifically for this problem they have a patch over one eye and a kind of peep lens for your dominant eye. they are called Hyskore shooting aid Item #xw-22-7369 they are $19.99. And to the serious shooter they are worth their weight in gold . This is a 2007 book I am looking at but they still sell them I know I bought a pair last november off their web sight. They are a god send to me.

The .40 is for fun and travel security - amatuer roadracing, so I have a couple motorcycles and gear in the back of my truck in a lotta shady hotels out in the middle of B.F.E..
Home defense is the basic Mossberg 500A with a Knoxx adjustable stock and #4 buck. Point and click problem solving at it's best.
I need an eye patch to help strengthen the right eye as it stands. It'll only help my shooting long-term.

I'll look into that. I go by a Bass Pro Shops at least once a month on my way to a racetrack...

Hey One in the Pipe..., I just tried that part number and it looks like it is missing a letter. I also tried a search with 'Hyskore' and 5 items came up..., but not that one!
I am heavy into competition shooting. I am on the patch also (you should never squint or close one eye - in photography also... I guess that would be a good thread as well) and use an aperture site attached to my shooting glasses. I shoot a long gun LH and pistols RH but with my left eye. I thought I was a freak... thank god for this site! I am pretty weird other ways also (okay..., a lot of other ways!), I golf RH, Bowl LH (does anyone even do that anymore?), write LH, eat L&RH. On and on. But I really do not think of myself as ambidexterious as I can't do all with both hands (all right no comments on that one!).
Great Question!

I tried the slightly gangsta angle, and got shells ejected onto my head. Luckily I was wearing my hat.... buddies of mine thought it was funny tho.
Tried shooting left, not much of an improvement, but I can do it solidly. So I'll keep working on it here and there.
I found, that shooting just one handed (right) altered my stance and pulled my aim back over to the right, where it should be. Still struggeling with a two-fisted grip, it seems to be the majority of my problem/issue. I think it's something to do with my stance.
I've been training my eyes to focus on the target and learn to line up the sights somewhat out of focus (due to the depth) and it's helping quite a bit. Putting about five hundred rounds through it has helped a lot too.
I too am left eye dominant and shoot rifles left handed which is just fine unless you are a bolt action shooter.
It will be awkward but do able UNLESS you have a scope to reach over in which case you will have to get out of shooting position to reload.
I got a left handed safety for my 10-22 and the rest of my refles have top receiver safeties.
As far as my 45 I am still working out my choices
1. shooting left handed and doing arm strengthening exercises and shooting with my left dominant eye and trying to shoot with both eyes open. Downside with a 45 is the slide catch and safety are positioned for right handers
2.OR shooting with my right hand and closing my left eye closed
( currently my choice).
However, some training will be necessary to ensure that I will close my left eye if under stress in a self defense situation. however this training sems to be easy- similar to automatically closing my right eye when picking up a rifle.
Number 2 is easiest but I believe 1. is the best overall solution especially if your using a pistol with "controls" for right handers.
I am a right handed shooter, but my left eye is the dominant one. What I'm finding is that I'm shooting pistols low and to the left.
Any tips for us crosseyed folks?
I am both left eye/left handed. Rifles aren't a problem as I've always used RH rifles and got used to it. Siearms are a PAIN due to safety location and port location. You can learn left-handed without canting your shots with practice.
Some hand guns have ambidextrous safeties or conversions.
I have adapted to a right hand right eye easily by closing my left eye. I did take some practice but it is now as automatic as closing my right eye while firing a rifle left handed.
As far as rifles, my 10-22 has a left handed safety installed and my other rifles and shotguns have a top tang safeties
As far as canting the pistol to one side I feel it kind of screws up the sight picture
Just a few of my experiences. You just have to try different methods and settle on one and PRACTICE with that method until it becomes automatic
Same problem. I am right handed in everything. However, because of my left eye dominance, I shoot left handed with both rifles and bows. I can't even shoot right handed with a rifle. It doesn't feel right at all (no pun intended). With a handgun though, I shoot with my right hand, (which is odd because it doesn't feel right in my left hand ), and look through the sights with my left eye.
confused yet? I am.
Try shooting left handed with a rifle though if you are left eye dominant. It seems to work a whole lot better for me.

I'm set up the other way; I'm left-handed, but right-eye dominant. So I've always shot right-handed anyway. I guess that works out a lot better than being right-handed but left-eye dominant.
With long guns, it isn't even an issue. But on pistols sometimes, I still find myself torn between going with my strong hand or my strong eye...particularly since I haven't shot handguns nearly as much as I have rifles.
natchez and shooters supply have those glasses/w the patch over one lense.. good to use at 22 rim fire matches.. the ole'boys hate it when i pull them out of my pocket.. sure improves my shootin'
