During the early outhouse days country people used corn cobs. They came in two colors - one was dark and one was white. The dark colors were used to wipe with, and the white ones were used to check with.

I think I almost got fired over toilet paper. I was introducing my boss to a group of people from another plant. My boss had been making a name for himself in the corporation by running a lean operation and everyone knew top management had their eye on him. What they didn't know was how hard it was to keep the place running working under his management philosophy.
I told the group I know you have heard about what a tight operation my boss runs here. And this is the way he lives at home. He is the only guy I know that uses both sides of the toilet paper. The group thought it was very funny - the boss did not.
