My brother started hiking and camping again,(64 yrs young. Well if he gets lost and wants a fire he will be in luck if he brings his kit!!
Sorry didn't put pic of cotton balls in, but they are in the kit.

I've found Pinetree sap to be the best fire starter and it takes up less space in your divvy bag. Frito's work pretty good.

I'm a philistine. I have some commerical firestarting packets in my grab & go bag. They each take up about the same space as a packet of sugar. I use them with a magnesium fire-starter block with built in flint and a knife as the striker and to shave the block. But hey, if it works for you it's the right thing for you. Survival is an art, not a science.

The strips of wood are Fat Wood, "pine roots". They start and lite very quickly and burn a long time.Only need a little piect to maske a good fire. This will be a guift for my brother.

I like the magnesium blocks. also, in wet conditions pull a bullet and use the powder. it's highly flamable (no, its not explosive) and is a big help if you need a lot of heat to get some fine twigs started. (if its wet pick dead twigs from the trees, not off the ground.)

Nice kit! Something to be said for the old fashioned tried and true. Several years ago, I bought one of those Gerber fire starter kits with the sparker and the white fuel tabs encased in plastic. Rooted it out a few weeks ago and the fuel tabs would not light. Seriously, I put them in a cast iron pan and they would not light with a blowtorch!!!
The sparker still worked fine but if anyone has old fuel tabs, check 'em out before you have to count on them.
