Asking the experts: Springfield GI or Milspec

Asking for opinions. Looking to get a GI or milspec model. What one is the best for the money? Are there any real big differences?

Are you referring to 1911's or M1 Garands? Springfield makes copies of both. (Actually I don't know if they do the Garands anymore).

Spend the extra and get the loaded. I bought a stainless GI 1911A1 back in 1990 and proceeded to spend another $1500 with Wilson Combat to get it tricked out. Now you can get 2-"Loaded" models for what I have in mine......my 2 cents.

or you can spend $420 for the GI like i did.
and not pour money into it.
and just have a good, solid ,reliable combat pistol.
i bought the gi because i liked the looks better than the milspec.
it's all personal preference.

I say get one of each. Get yourself the GI model to have a good all around as Billy said reliable shooter. Then also save up and get one that's as they say "loaded". But whichever you do, get the one you want and have the money for. Remember Kimber, STI, Springfield, S&W, Les Baer, Wilson Combat, will all be up there, Wilson being the most expensive, then STI and Les Baer, then the Kimber then Springfield and S&W. But both Kimber and S&W can be had for under $1000...

I bought one in the latter category and plan on getting one in the first. Going to a gun show and trust me, if the price is right, and if I find one, I'll be coming home with a GI model. I like the looks of 'em too.

It's either that or a hammerless .38/.38+P for conceal carry/back up.

Anyhow, here you go, take your pick. Two from the GI model category.

Rock Island 1911 Tactical : Semi-auto at GunBroker.com

Rock Island 1911 .45 2-Tone NIB 45 : Semi-auto at GunBroker.com

Here's one of those Kimbers for under $1000 I mentioned above...

<<<<<<< That's a terrific price on this model. I think anyhow.

And according to the ad/seller, here's a "loaded" Springfield for under $1000?

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=126740092

Or, you can take the alternative route to the 1911 and get either the Springfield XD or the S&W M&P?

I was looking at these two as well.

The MilSpec has adjustable sights, a deeper cut in the ejection port and a couple of other little things that make it a bit better and worth a couple bucks more, IMVHO.

I really like the look of the GI, but I'm going with the MilSpec this fall....

I have the Springfield Mil-spec model and I love it. Never jammed, even though I mostly feed it steel-cased Wolf ammo. Pretty accurate for what it is.

One of the biggest differences is the sights... the GI has the low profile staked in front sight with no contrast, just black. My wife has this gun and even with the front sight painted it's not as easy to get a sight picture. I prefer the Mil-spec model myself. The Milspec will probably feed non ball ammo better too.

I think the hammer is also different. With the mil-specs or loaded ones you get the skeletonized hammer and on the GI you get the, well, for lack of knowing the exact name of that style of hammer, I'll have to just call it the GI hammer. lol

Ended up bringing home a loaded. After handling and comparing I decided to get the loaded over the milspec or GI. Has more of the Extras I wanted. Thanks for all your help guys. I'll try and get some pics later.
