9mm Carbine or 12ga Shotgun?

Right now I only have guns that are more or less just fun to shoot (.22s, bolt action 12ga, etc.). I want something that would be good for protection. Environment would be home, outside but nothing to a major long distance.

Choices...

Hi-Point 9mm Carbine

or

Remington 870
Mossberg 500

The budget is low, $250.

Whatcha think???

Oh btw, I do have a 91/30 for long distance =)

870 or a Moss 500 definitely. Long range is taken care of already with 91/30, 12 GA has many types of ammo and is powerful up close.

Read my mind.

If they Hi-point held some more rounds I could see getting that one.

I have a chance on a 30" 870 for $200. Good buy, but man is that long!

True, it is long, but you can always save for another barrel and have a hunting barrel and a home defense barrel. They are very easy to switch. Buy the 870, Good buy.

You want be buying a new 870 or a 500 defense shotgun unless you can find a used one in your price range and then a used one would cost more than what you want to pay.
What you will find if your leaning towards a defense shotgun is a Maverick 88 security or an H&R Pardner Pump defense shotgun.

These are within your budject of $250.00

I recently bought a Maverick 88 and I like it, BUT I dropped it in the middle of my kitchen floor the other night and it fell apart !!!!!! POS !!! I thought.

The anti-jamb elevator that takes the shell to the barrel ''pins'' that hold the rails in place inside the reciever fell inside the reciever.

Though I took out the trigger mechanisim and plugged the rails back to where they go. I now have a very low oppinion about the Maverick 88 Security and the trigger works are all plastic.

The H&R Pardner Pump shotguns are as well made as you can make them and for what they sell for you just can't pass up looking into one the defense models.

The only thing I can find wrong with them is there heavy in weight.

I own a Pardner pump so I know...A.H

Check this one out from Cenrterfire Systems (Link: Rock Island M5 Tactical 12GA Shotgun Part #AC-SGN-M5 )

At $239.99, it looks pretty good. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have sling mounts. I would also want some ghost ring sights. Norinco, under the brand name "Interstate", makes a shotgun similar to this Rock Island, but it does have ghost ring sights and used to go on sale at Big 5 for $199.00. Now, however, they're really scarce.

Here's the Interstate shotgun I mentioned:

I found it listed at Able Ammo (Link: Interstate 982 Black Synthetic 12 Ga Defender w/18.5 in Barrel/Ghost Ring ) for $202.00. Too bad it's out of stock.

See that top pin in the reciever behind the bolt that lowercase has pictured ? Theres one on the other side to.
They fell into the reciever of my Maverick when I dropped it.
Those pins are part of a rail thats attached to the shell elevator in a Maverick and a Mossberg and probably this shotgun. Theres 2 of them, the 870 remington is a better design and the H&R is a clone of the 870...A.H

EDIT: that interstate looks like the 1st. H&R Pardner pumps that came out. With the rounded reciever.
It's probably a good shotgun, the stocks are identical.

Buy the used 870. It is the most produced and sold shotgun in history for a reason.

lowercase, Chapman87 can do a little better than that if he hops over to Lebanon, Ohio to visit Southern Ohio Gun. They have the IAC Model 982 with ghost ring sights, synthetic furniture and a rubber buttpad for $180. They also have Remington Model 870s similarly tricked out for $200. I'd suggest he contact SOG's customer service and inquire.

12g all the way... birdshot for hunting bird, slugs for hunting big game, all sorts of buckshots for homedefense and hunting. They make side saddles and tube extentions for the 870... thats what im doing to mine, im getting the ten shot tube extension, six shot side saddle and a pistol grip buttstock. semi-tacticool but could still go hunting if i pluged the tube...

Great info.

Thanks, Cyrano. Heck for 200 bucks, I say 870 all the way.

I've really been looking at HD shotguns lately, and the Mossberg 590 AT had caught my eye because I love the way it is configured. Unfortunately, the 9-shot, 20" barrel model is just too darn big and heavy for me. The Interstate fit me just fine, though.

Go with the 870. It is hard to beat for an all around gun. I would look for a shorter barrel with the remchokes. I have the turkery barrel on mine (like 21"-22"). Works great...

You can usually find some in excellent condition used for $150 or less.
Tons of "extras" available since most all Mossy 500 parts fit the Maverick.
One of the best values out there.

All good info. I sort of want to stay away from buying one online and having to pay all the transfer fees. I am going to look tomorrow at some 500s and 870s. See what happens.

The new gun goggles, Used shot guns can be just as effictive.

I wouldent have a qualm of buying a used shotgun in sound mechanical condition, mabe a old police model with a replacement barrel with replaceable chokes brand and model permitting.
my uncle has a old J.C.Higgins bolt action shotgun with a variable choke that I wouldent feel underprotected with it, any shotgun brand well maintained in good mechanical condition can be used to protect your life and property.
Ive seen some very good shotguns, smith & wession police shotguns are still around after being long discontinued, I have some friends that have different brands of pumps (Savage'620', H&R-'model 925', HighStandard'K2011',Winchester 1200 & 1300's,Ithaca'37',Nobel'65') any one them will dust anything you want in 12 & 20 gage's by not reserching brands and models your restricting your self to a very narrow slection.

The 12g will be more versatile by far. The only reason I'd say go with the carbine would be if you are planning on bugging out (which would limit ammo carrying capacity), but since you are planning on staying around the house the 12g would be just about perfect.

I'll also add that since you will be going with a shotgun, you might want to invest in a good sidearm, or at least practice loading it (including through-the-port loading) a lot. Shotguns are slow to reload so once the weapon is empty it will be more trouble than a quick mag change to get back in the fight.

I favor the Mossbergs myself, but any quality pump will be much more versatile then a 9mm carbine. If they made hi-cap mags for the .40 Hi-Point I would buy on, just don't have a use for a pistol caliber carbine with 10rd mag. I aint a 9mm fan anyway, just call me Anti-Mousegun! LOL
