Hey to those of you who I have shot with at my "range" north of town.
A friend of mine and I went out there yesterday and the police came out.
It was the Union Pacific police. A track inspector saw us and called in since we were close to the tracks. The officer was really cool so it wasn't a big deal. He even gave us a suggestion on a better place for us to shoot. Well I guess I'll need to find another location. Oh well.
Yeah man, you don't want to phawk around near railroads, especially with guns. They have federal authority, and usually no sense of humor. And you DAMN sure don't want to be near the tracks, or drive over them where there ISN'T a grade crossing built. Best to stay clear away from anything choo-choo related, and keep yourself out of hot water.

Dealing with the Union Pacific has been hell for me everytime. when it comes to right of way issues they are second only to God. At least that is how they act. They sure don't like construction anywhere near their tracks.
It is a long(50 miles) drive, but it is so remote that it is worth it. I haven't come in from the Nipton side, which may actually be a tad shorter, but it also means entering California. Give me a call and I will give you directions.

I work in telecom, and most of our fiber optic backbone cables are laid in RR rights-of-way, so we have to go through RR safety classes. Trains on the move can do incredible damage to ANYTHING that gets in their way, so they're very serious about keeping people away from the rights-of-way.
I've found myself in situations where I've been within feet of fast-moving trains, with no way to get away, and it's VERY un-nerving! Loads can shift and things can hang out to the side and git ya. Steel banding straps can break, and whip in the air like a machete. I've also seen a single boxcar come whizzing past, making virtually no noise as it went by.
There was a work crew gondola car full of junk steel and ties that got loose here a few years ago, and went for 30+ miles by itself, coasting down a slight grade. It got up to 90 mph before it started back upgrade and slowed down enough to stop it. No, I prefer to stay FAR away from the tracks, thank you very much.

Yeah Rondog I agree they take it serious because it is serious. I have sat through the same safety classes. The permits and insurance paperwork is just a nightmare to deal with. Everytime we have a project come up that's one of the first things I ask is if it is near a set of tracks.
Jondavis that doesn't sound to bad. How is it for say setting up a camping site?
I once applied for a job at Union Pacific. The district manager said he thinks railroad first aid kits should contain nothing more than tourniquets and body bags.
This was probably a blessing in disquise. At least the cop was cool.

It is really a good camping place, except for the occasional wind storm. My daughters and I went out the night before quail season opened, and it was so windy it took over an hour to fix coffee the next morning. It is really beautiful, some of the most rugged mountains you've ever seen.
Well you're always welcome on my side of town. I have yet to be hassled by the Po'leece. Went out last Saturday and was the only one shooting.
Well, that's a nuisance. Where have you been going? We're going to want to go again soon, just had (semi) expensive Jeep repairs to make, registrations on both cars to re-up and ammo is still annoying to find for anything like a reasonable price.

GRRR!! I really enjoyed heading out there. Well, I bet that I can still go to places that the UP can't...
I am shooting near my house in the south end of the valley. Out near Sloan canyon. Not many people out there where I go and plenty of area to shoot. Pretty easy access as well. I am always willing to get together for shooting.
Probably give it a month or so. Like I said, we got absolutely crushed by bills this month. I hate when annual stuff all falls right at once. But I need more practice, dammit. It really felt great figuring out the trap shooting again after so long. Once I'm back up to spec (and the wife, too) we'd love to see at least about upland game, maybe the coyotes, and the pigs if we get a reply on it.
well I did a little snooping around on google to see if I could find more info and I posted it on the other thread. It's going to be hot soon so I don't know that it will be so easy to hunt them as they will more than likely go nocturnal. And since snakes do their hunting at night alot of the time I think i'm going to wait until things cool off a bit.
