Off grid food storage.......Root Cellars?

Back in the day's not all that long ago folks kept there perishables in the root cellar.
Cream, eggs, beer, canned (jars), fresh produce
How many folks actually have a properly set up root cellar?
one vented, sloped floor with a drain? shelves or benches or tiers?
Sloped roof? summer time the soaking the soil over head to keep it's walls cool through evaprative cooling? Which were best the concrete, brick or block constructions?

The old root cellar may make a comback if things keep going the way they are!

I am improvising a large crawl space area since my house has no basement or root cellar. I was just looking through a gardening book last night with plans for building basic root cellars all the way up to high tech with AC & Heat.

You can even make a very rudimentary one by digging a pit and lining it with straw. Putting in your storables, covering in straw and using your backfill to cover to a peak. Now that was a root cellar from WAY back! lol

We plan on building a home in next 3-5 years and I would like to put a root cellar in. I am interested to see some responses on material!!!
