SHTF: "pandemic" or extreme flu virus

OK, I know im probably openning a big can of worms right now but...

how are you going to stock for an up coming crisis, with the threat of this new virus the "swine flu" what precautions are you taking? what meds are you going to stock up on?

from what i have read... amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivir are recommended... The last two are recommended to treat and prevent(?) swine flu infections. they say to take the antivirals should be taken as soon as possible when symptoms appear...

symptoms: fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, coughing and in addition: runny nose, sore throat, nausea vomiting and diarrhea.

Now to me this sounds just like a very severe cold or flu, so to me i would treat it like that untill it gets beyond my ability to cope... "my opinion".

items:
- flu shot
- Tamiflu: or oseltamivir phosphate
- cold meds, maximum strength
- vitamins
- fluids: water and electro-lite replenishment drinks i.e. gatorade, powerade not energy drinks
- if you cant eat, drink broths chicken or beef, better to put something in your stomach then nothing
- wash your hands often
- hand sanitizer
- keep house clean
- face masks, just in case

any medic, rn's, cna's or doc's please feel free to add anything and everything you can...

good luck everyone...
-

I am not well researched on this new "swine flu" as I was out on a camping trip when it apparently became big news, anyway, does it how does it attack a victim? Does it act independently or will it work with pre-existing conditions? For example, I have TB will it attack my body with the TB (dormant) or will it act independently? I guess if I get it i will also have my TB fair up and then be really scewed...hmm this sounds like no fun...

Hint: If you plan to get some N95 masks, you must get the "Medical" rated type, NOT the "Industrial" rated type sold at hardware stores for paint & dust.
P100 masks are good too.
Full face mask is ideal, as there is the possibility of infection via the moist eyes.
Picked this up on another forum site.

Personally, funds are low just now - "too much month at the end of the money"! Come Thursday (payday) I will be laying in some meds and other supplies.
Be ready for possible few weeks of quarentine.......

Avoid schoolkids and large groups of people like, uh.... the plauge.

Luckily for me I stocked up on cyborg parts, so I can just replace whatever if the case of an epidemic and machines are immune to biological viruses. Just better not load Windows on any of my cyborg parts I will get tons of viruses, the digital kind!

In 1918, almost everyone caught the bug and about 2% died from it. In those cases, people developed pnuemonia. Ironically, the strongest people were the mostly likely to die because their immune systems, activated by the bug, attacked normal human tissue. This resulted in acute respitory distress (ARDs) and caused the victims to look like plague victims.

In 1918, there was a small flu outbreak in warm weather that was mild and over quickly. When October came, the flu returned with a vengence. So yeah, having about a moth of food on hand will be helpful as well as water. Wash your hands and don't shake hands. The Mexicans are saying don't greet with a kiss, since that is pretty routine there. If the flu hits your town, stay away from anyplace where groups of people meet. That means schools, religious services, sporting events, retail stores etc. Stay the hell away from the hospital unless you have no real alternative. Remember, a person is contagious for three days BEFORE getting symptoms. So just because someone seems okay doesn't mean everything is okay.

None of those so-called dietary supplements will do anything to ward off the flu. Those products are nothing more than the modern equivalent of the frontier snake-oil salesman. Untested products in use in 1900 like nerve tonic or liver pills would be about as useful.

There is no vaccine, but there might be one by autumn. If you get sick, IMMEDIATELY seek medical attention. Anti-viral drugs only work within the first day or two at the outside of the onset of symptoms. The last time I was sick, I had been so for several days and my wife was just starting to feel lousy. The anti-virals worked for her, but not for me.

Once you have been sick and recovered, you will have complete immunity. Which raises the question, is it better to get sick during the mild summer phase of the bug than to avoid it and get nailed by the much more ferocious winter phase? Well, I don't know the answer to that.

Believe what you like. In terms of body count, the 1918 flu was the single most destructive event in human history. It killed more people than WWI or WWII. If anything, the media has understated the threat. I was just listening to a BBC broadcast from Mexico City. They report that the streets are deserted. Usually on a Monday, there isn't enough room to turn around. The whole city has shut down.

Well, for now the two most important things

are hand washing on a continual basis and making certain your food is properly cooked.

We don't know what will happen. One thing to consider is that a virus can mutate its protein coating as time moves on. So, this thing could just vanish, or it could stay the same, or it could become a disaster.

But clean hands and properly cooked foods are a common sense first line of defense.

Don't forget to clean your nose either. Most people carry staph infectious bacteria in their noses. Once it get into the blood stream is when it can cause problems.

Viruses are just one worry, bacteria is also all over us, some good some bad.

I was not there for any of those events or been to Mexico today to check out the streets. So I really could not tell you any numbers guess I just have to trust the media that reported it. I am sure things are bad but I doubt it is bad is people are making it out to be.

i suspect this virus is a govt. made virus and released in mexico to see how fast it will spread.
today was anounced that there is already a vaccine available.
how do they make it overnight?

remember the SARS scare from Toronto, Canada one year ago?
well, a virus made in a Canadian lab and tested.
i consider this B&C warfare on the population by the govt.
maybe the think it is time to thin the herd?
