All the regulars would know what happened to me, getting robbed and all. Got a chance to move to the country again, but am divided on it. Lots of pros, lots of cons as well. The pros are obvious that' it's safer, quieter, and you know your neighbours, The cons are that with medical problems I'd have to travel a good distance to see a regular Dr., let alone my specialists. However the cost of that is weighed out by renting twice the size place, for 1/2 the money, and dis-ability covering a good chunk of the cost. The major draw backs are I'd have to make new friends, and rarely go out, not that there's anywhere to go in a town of 900!! Seriously if a guys single, it is a hard choice to move to a place with 3 men for every girl, and generally only 3 teeth for every girl also. I would miss public transportation, but gain a town wide curfew on kids. Miss a daily paper, but gain a place where the vandalizem of 1 car makes the front page of the weekly one. Any opinions?

I miss living in the small towns. I left a small town to move to a town of over a million people. I regret several things about moving, but it was necessary for the job.... Lower cost of living would give you a chance to get back on your feet after the string of bad luck you've had....

Man country living sounds good but for myself I am just to used to the convenience of the city. Although my wife wouldn't agree with me.

If your medical condition is not immediately life threatening if you become ill, I'd say head for the country. With internet access and satelite/cable tv available, what are you going to miss in the city? Other than an occasional fine restuarant meal, I can't think of any.

Taras: Maybe a move to the small town for a couple of years would be good for you. It could give you a sense of security after living next to that thug in your old apartment building. Rent is usually lower, too. With the development of some personal acquaintances you could get permission to hunt on some farmers properties. Also, there could be some good target shooting sites in the rural area that you could get permission to use. On the down side it seems that everyone eventually finds out about your personal business. Will they accept the fact that you're a gun enthusiast or will they freak out? Also, it is usually difficult for a "new guy in town" to get treated very friendly. The "old guard" is slow to accept someone new. Any strange car in your driveway becomes the target of nosy neighbors. Medical help you require may be limited in the small town, too. How far is it to a good hospital? The availability of good housing is sometimes difficult to find in smaller towns. The reason I'm speaking out is because I've "been there, done that". I was raised on a farm adjacent to a town of 300. Nearly everyone was related or had relatives in the area for many years prior. For some of the above reasons I eventually moved to the K.C., MO metropolitian area to take advantage of job opportunities and to have some personal privacy. Oxford

Canned Heat Lyrics : Going Up The Country Lyric I'm going up the country, babe don't you wanna go I'm going up the country, babe don't you wanna go I'm going to some place where I've never been before I'm going, I'm going where the water tastes like wine Well I'm going where the water tastes like wine We can jump in the water, stay drunk all the time I'm gonna leave this city, got to get away I'm gonna leave this city, got to get away All this fussing and fighting, man, you know I sure can't stay Now baby, pack your leaving trunk, you know we've got to leave today Just exactly where we're going I cannot say, but We might even leave the USA 'Cause there's a brand new game that I want to play No use of you running, or screaming and crying 'Cause you've got a home as long as I've got mine

Yep, the privacy thing is true. Plus the town folk don't like strangers all the time, it takes a while, I found that out the hard way. But I've been to this town before, and have a sister living there.

I know every few months or so I go to United country realty.com and look at the "cheep" land..houses out in the sticks...towns with 9,000 people or so.....would love to live were the only "crack" people talk about is in sidewalks not for smokeing.....a lot depends on what you want...and situations such as employment..medical needs..family ect. My wife and kids put the kebosh on moveing to the sticks.....and dateing is something wifee poo dont like me doing...so # of women in an area not a big factor to me. But if you find a place you like (maybe spend a few weekends there....and your needs can be meet.........the follow your hart.

If he is like me he doesn't have local access to the net. It would get pretty expensive to make a long distance call every time you signed on.

dhermesc, The answer to that is satalite. When I moved was out here a standard television antenna would get you diddly but made a great lightning rod, though. So, I went with DirecTV. Dish companies are becoming ever so competative with the dial-up internet market that, for nearly the price of other ISPs, you can go satalite with unlimited use. I get tons more channels with my dish than I ever did with cable for about the same price. Tack on my ISP service I might be paying, perhaps, $8 more? Something like that. Plus, I have a sneaking hunch that satalite will be the only way to go eventually...but, I might be wrong. At any rate, I surely hope taurus is OK.

Ya, he is alright for a Canook, hehehehe. I am biased as I live out in the sticks and I wouldn't have it any other way. We have to plan ahead when going to the store and such, don't want to end up hitting the store every night. But we are only 12 miles out of town, so it ain't so bad. Far enough away to love the solitude but close enough to get things when we need them. As for being single and living out in the boonies - well, that I leave to you. I was in Juneau Alaska for 3 years and only had a girlfriend for the last 6 months - did get a little action here and there but being alone out inthe sticks can make a man crazy and I mean crazy. I would get some strange looks when we got back into Juneau after fishing for 4 months straight - I must have looked pretty darn horny cause all the women were on the other side of the bar watching me real close and keeping tabs on thier numbers making sure I didn't run off with one of 'em.
