Question Veterans organizations....

I got so pizzed today...went to a VFW post that I have gone to at least 20 times. As soon as I walked in the door the barmaid that has served me many times goes "Oh, your an AMVET aren't you?" I said "Yes, the same as the last 20 times you asked me!" She then says that VFW doesn't honor AMVET cards and that I need a sponsor to be in there! I asked her why?? AMVETS honors all vets be they VFW or American Legion! She told me that she knows I'm a friend of of the night barmaid and she'll serve me a drink till she gets there! So I thought no problem then. Well once my friend gets there the barmaid who was hassling me tells my friend that I need to sign the book. I refused to because I am a veteran like everyone else in here and AMVETS don't make fellow vets sign in...thats reserved for non vets and immediate family of vets. That is a major problem these days..we all served, quit being so snotty and then wonder why their post is dying off with the old members! We were all ready to die if need be!!!

In 1988 I joined the VFW (My Expaditionary medal qulafied me NOT my compat action ribbon...go figure)....the American Legion said I was NOT elagable.....made noe sense too me and I did not realy give a rats mauser about it. I've only heard of a few Am-vets places and none in my area...but I aint realy been looking to hard....my only problem with ANY of the organzations is I dont see a reason to join.......all I see is a few people drinking cheep drinks in a fairly dark hole of a bar.....I dont see them helping out vetrans and such (I read their magazines and its always some small post out of state donateing a van or something to help but not my local post)....I know the VFW is my service rep for my VA Claim....not realy sure what they do other than send my copies of the va rateing board letters.

I urge any vet to join the Amvets if you have one in your town/city...they recognize any vet as long as they were discharged honorably...not snotty like other organizations.

Thanx for the info, will give Amvets a look. Tried the Legion twice, check didn't clear, couldn't get a hold of anyone to figure it out.

I have been a member of VFW #1114 since I returned in 1969. They are a pretty good group of people. All they ask is you produce your DD214 in order to prove your foreign war participation to become a member. However, anyone, I repeat anyone can enter the club and be served(even non-vets). The only time you cannot be served is for special events. They have a great lunch and dinner menu, which is very economical.

Welcome Home, Brother

An unpopular war, many years ago
Your country called and you went
You were so young and didn't know why
You had to be there, but, you did your duty
Did what had to be done, no questions asked
When you came home
There were no victory parades for the battles won
No shouts of hooray for saving the day
People turned their backs and called you names
They said of your service you should be ashamed
It took many years to get it all back together
But after thirty plus years your life is much better
Now the time has arrived, this needs to be said
Welcome home Brother, thank you , well done!
