Well, I just got back from horse-tradin' a .22 rifle for a jonboat. I picked up a marlin 6080 3 weeks ago for 70$ and a buddy of mine had a ol' boat he wanted to get rid of, he's happy and I'm happy! It's a 10ftx3.5ft flat bottom, riveted aluminium, just about right for me and my wife to go down the river in, I'm gonna put a trolling motor on it I think. I'm kinda excited, this is my first boat, so I thought I'd share. I can't believe I'm 27 and never owned my own boat, just never been into fishin' enough to warrant it. Here's some pics, not too great, took 'em with my webcam. She aint purdy, but she floats! My wife took the last one, said I had to put it on here to show ya'll what a redneck you're talkin' to!

One throw cushion two vests. A cheap Garmin fish finder. 60 lb Tolling motor. Anchor. Harbor Freight has a five HP Briggs & Stratton engine for cheap. Carry a survival kit and Radio. Be ready to be inspected. Now you can reach the big ones. Learn marine language. On metal boats, I used indoor out carpet on the bottom to make them quiet. Never lose the drain plug.
Bring paddles for her in case the motor don't work.
Here's a idea I want to bounce off ya'll. My dad's, brother's, and cousin's boats all have styrofoam in the seats for flotation and mine doesn't, I thought about getting a few cans of the spray foam sealant from Wally-World and spraying it in the seats, what do ya'll think, will it work?

Yes, it'll work. It isn't a perfect solution, but it's a lot better than nothing.
Thanks! I'm not to interested in motorizing it except maybe a trolling motor, I'd like to fit it with oarlocks maybe. I just got it for a boat I can throw in the truck and putt around ponds, small lakes, and creeks at short notice. I can borrow my family's boats when I need them. 24ft deckboat, Nitro bass boat, two 14ft jonboats w/outboards.
The only thing as good as owning cool stuff is having cool brothers that do! LOL

If you can afford it, use a spray-in bedliner to line the inside of your boat, including the bottom. It will seal it from any leaks now and in the future. Alot of guys I know are doing this.
thrillbilly...Congratulations on getting your first boat!
Here's some items I'm required to have, or think I should have, in my boat any time it's in the water:
-Life jacket & floatation device for every passanger(usually a foam cushion)
-Oar
-Spare drain plug
-Throw tow rope about 20 ft long at least
-Pressurized can type of air horn. I also have a referee whistle
-Fire extinguisher
-Ownership papers: Current boat & motor registration papers, copy of boat title
-(night use) Front and reat lighting...front(red/green), rear(white)
-First Aid kit
My ex brother in law had one like that. He put about two hundred pounds of putty on the bottom to keep it from leaking. Till he got done putting his gear, battery, trolling motor, and himself in the boat, there really wasn't much room between the top of boat, and water. We caught some nice fish out of his boat, learned that less was better for tackle. Also found out that big fish can tow a little boat, and that was with his trolling motor going full tilt the other way.
Have fun with it. I think you need a noise maker for it too. I read the other lists of you should bring, and a whistle, and a big spunge for bailing are about all I can think of that you don't have listed here. Oh that and duct tape, just have to have that.

Good idea. But I wouldnt reccomend a black spray. Use a lighter color--tan if you can find it. It seems like a black boat in the middle of a lake in july or august would be kinda like a cast iron skillet on a wood stove.
I have a 10ft Sears that my grandpa gave to my dad. He found it washed up in the river bottoms after a flood. My buddy and I took it and cleaned it up a little and gave it a custom paint job. It now bears the name "The Blue Streak" due to the electric blue stripe down both sides. Unfortunately we dont take it out much. Its a real pain to row and KY changed the laws so now even with a trolling motor it has to be licensed. Just dont have the time to fish to justify paying to license it. Maybe next year.
We also have a 14ft V-hull that washed up that needs cleaned up too.
but when I was very young my father obtained a similar boat. Uncertain about the quality and age, we cleaned it then fiberglassed the interior and exterior. It lasted for about twenty years with no problems. Dad sold it when he got his cancer diagnosis. I was too emotionally shot to pieces to even think about what was going on around us. I wish I still had the boat.
