I'd have to list the book of Revelation as my "favorite." Of course, the Left Behind series, which is one conceptual take on the book of Revelation, is a fantastic series.
I also like David Graham's Down to a Sunless Sea (1979). It's a great read that's, unfortunately, out of print (last time I checked).
Stephen King's The Stand is also fantastic, as is the Dark Tower series (not really TEOTWAWKI, but cool other-world anyway).
And, I have to list Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand. Some people might not consider that in the TEOTWAWKI realm, but I do.

If ya'll have any recommendations, I would love to hear them! | There's a movie called "The Day after" with John Lithgow, Jason Robards, and Steve Guttenberg. It was filmed in the early 80's in Lawrence KS ( my hometown) about a nuclear launch between us and the Sov's. I think this is probably the most likely scenario out of all the disaster movies, JMO.

Of course, if we still have any nuclear weapons before this happens, we may be able to alter its course or obliterate it. IF we haven't destroyed them all in a disarmament treaty. And IF we can see it before it gets too close. Unfortunately, NASA's budget is getting cut (again!) in the name of fiscal responsibility while we pay out money to other, more pressing needs.

I would think some economic instability will be the thing that brings down major countries, major natural diasters bring down clusters of civilization, and rarely do you experiance an event that brings humanity from being a world of some civilization to none. I think the most likely thing that may happen is the US Dollar and most other 1st world currencies being destroyed and the global economics are turned upside down. This will send the world into a 3rd world status, which won't be felt much by Africa. If you want a great bug out location, look to areas that are not poppulated by urban idiots.

The movie, Defiance is quite good if you have not seen it. Set in WWII, a group of Jews are resisting the Germans. Living in the woods. Good stuff! It gives a fair impression of how you would probably try to survive and the social aspect is interesting.

| Jeremiah was a series that lasted two seasons on some cable network. It stars Luke Perry and Malcom Jamal Warner. A plauge wipes out all adults and only pre-pubescent kids are left behind before the disease burns itself out. The series starts 15 yrs after the plauge, so the kids who survived are young adults trying to make a new world.
It's probably available on DVD. I watched it on instant play on Netflix. It's pretty darn good. I'd almost say the best post-apocalyptic series I've ever seen, and I think I've seen them all. The first season is good, but unlike most, IMO, it gets even better in the second season. I highly recommend it.

For anyone is serious about survival and rebuilding in the event of SHTF, look up the FIREFOX series. It's been around for a while and gives insight to how things were done before.

Her Imperial Majesty redid the house a few years ago and in the trade that gave me the lower level of the house as my "study" (it still has a washer and dryer closet in it, so you decide how far it's 'mine') one of the things I lost was the book shelving. Even granting that from my point of view the ideal home would be a former public library because I'd finally have enough shelf space for all my books - and I'm not kidding - the fact I can't lay my hands on my books because they are in rubbermaid boxes in a shed infuriates me beyond belief. The Foxfire books are among them... somewhere.
On the other hand, I do have The Second Oldest Profession, which tells you everything you want to know about how to build a still and make the good ol' mountain dew, where I can lay my hands on it! Just in case, you know...

Always wished they'd make a movie of it. | I just ordered the book looking forward to reading it.
