this happened back in the 60's in south Jersey. 3 guys went deer hunting in the Wharton state forest. it was very cold. one hunter fell out of his tree stand and broke his leg, so one hunter stayed with him while the other walked out for help. it was starting to get dark and started snowing.
the 3 were found dead from exposure, the one going for help apparently was walking in circles.
i always wondered why they did not try to make a fire to keep warm, perhaps they did not think that sh*t happens, and were not prepared for anything. when i was an active hunter, i carried things even if it was a rabbit field to save myself if need be. water proofed strike anywhere matchs, GI fire tabs (i forget their name), space blanket, compass. never needed them but it was a comfort to have them.

Yep, learned my lesson when Dad and I (I was about 16) got lost while squirrel hunting. We ended up walking about ten miles back to the truck once we came out on a highway and knew where we were.
I got pretty lost while camping once, but I was never really lost. Before I leave my POD I note where the sun is, I keep track of time, and just follow the sun back. I always have my knife, magnesium fire starter, and some paracord. With all that stuff you can easily survive a night.

I've been lost once, in my boat when I was wildfowling a few miles from home. The Haar (scotch sea mist) came in when I was heading home and eventually I realised I was going round in circles. This was winter time on the East Coast of Scotland, I knew I was OK going North, South or West but didn't really want to go East (North Sea). I was also just a few hundred yards from the coast when I lost visibility and in an area I'd lived in all my life. Luckily, because I had been out shooting, I had my outdoor pack on my belt & in the bottom was my old trusty compass, dragged it out, set it on the deck and headed North. Sobering experience. If I go out shooting, walking or fishing, the pack is on my belt.
