Recharging your batteries during long term power outage

I read about these in one of the mags i read often and thought it was a pretty useful piece of equipment that some here may want to look into.

As many of us have or rely on useful gadgets in our emergency equipment, it might be helpful to have a practical and replenishable outside power source.

For everything from car batteries, flashlights, radios, etc.

- Brunton Solaris- These are flat, foldaway, lightweight, portable solar panels which can be used in an emergency to recharge most of your battery needs with the power of the sun.

You can get them in 6 and 12 watt sizes and cost $200 and $400 respectively.

The magazine I got this from charged 4 AA size NiMH batteries in about 30 min, they also tested charging some radio 6 volt batteries and a 12volt car battery which the authors were using as a portable power source.

This is a great "backpack start" to having very small quantities off-grid power...

...but not sufficient to sustain long-term needs of any significance.

If funds are available, look into higher wattage
Monocrystalline Silicon (monocrystalline silicon) solar panels, MPPT controller (MPPT Solar Charge Controllers), true sine inverter (How to Choose a Power Inverter) and a bank of large capacity L-16 size deep cycle batteries (Rolls L-16 6 Volt Deep Cycle Battery - Solar Electric Supply) for a 24-48 volt UPS...

...and then you'll be able to meet and sustain power needs.

I have been interested in these for a while, might not be a bad addition to a 'bug out'.
