as some know i work at walmart and i take some time every day to look for new food that fits my criteria, well i found two new products, recently...
first off i can not get into artificial sweetener because of my taste buds however in a SHTF situation i am sure i would probably make due with some, or i could carry some for trade, sugar about 2 or 4 months into a long term SHTF situation would be a valulable commodity however it is very heavy so you can do two things, either carry only a small amount or if you take into account the artifical sugar everything changes, most artificial stuff is a cup for cup equilent for cooking and sweetening purposes, also it is very lightweight as it is, i think it is depending on the brand 4 to 7 times as sweet as sugar
so in sxummery instead of about a pound a cup you can get 4-7 cups of bartering food for one pound, if you can't eat it like me there may be a possibily of potentially trading it for real sugar, oh well that is just my thoughts for that
my next food item i found was brenton original crackers, they are preatty much premium ritz crackers and while i can't compare the difference i read the nutrition facts on the crackers it was ausome. crackers go with quite a bit and if you do peanut butter on it is quite good. ok, one box worth of crackers weighs 8 oz and in that 8 oz there is 1020 calories so when food space is limited and you can get 1000 calories in 8 oz of weight it is really nice. it is a fairly small amount of fat, only 42.5 grams and all things considered this is preatty decent for this type of cracker, it has about 1800 mg of sodium which isn't too much and it has 136 carbs so while it is not the best thing when it comes to dense carbs protien and fat it goes with alot of difffernet meal items and is excelent calorie to weight ratio when you have limited weight to carry, i think the best you can really hope to go it is 1.5 or so pounds per day unless you get freeze dried and yet i have heard that if you are desperate 1000 calories a day for 5-7 days is possible, thopugh you will loose some wieght
edit
i have some smuckers goober peanut butter that has grape jelly stripes and while iu know net weight does not incliude the glass jar there is 2400 calories in 1 lb 2 oz worth of food, so for 2.2 pounds of food you can get 4400 calories with plenty of protien from the peanut butter, 2.2 pounds for a potential 4 days of food is preatty darn good for my purposes

Reason: add info
i actually did some more math and if you include the jar and the box it is possible to take 30+ days worth of food in 15 pounds, if you assume 4000 calories in 2.7 pounds and i was told by a nurse while it wouldn't be ideal it is possible to live on 700 calories for about a week or so and if you don't burn way more off, take it easy while you forage for some extra. you divide 15 by 2.7 then multiply the result by 4000 is 22,222 calories divided by 700 equals 31, my design is to just get something for on the days when i can't get some sort of game animal since chances are you can't get something every single day. somehow though i got it to 51 days using the same stuff but this is a far cry from 1.5 pounds per day
fwiw, agriculture has won the war between farming and hunting. you need land, labor, water, seeds, & sun. hunting works till city folks get hungry, then there's no game. THAT WEEK, there's no game. What they don't kill, they'll run off. Pigs, chickens, rabbits..you can grow. Might take ten or a dozen people to be viable, farming.
Actually if you look at some of the newer artificial sweeteners, they are often much more potent than the real thing. You can buy Sucralose packets, and they equal to about 4x their volume in sugar.
I don't react well to the fake stuff though. Aspartame makes me break out, and Splenda gives me bad stomach issues.

We are experimenting with growing Stevia- also known as "the sweet leaf"
The seeds are very expensive, the leaves, when dried and ground into powder are so sweet that 1 teaspoon has the sweetening power of 1 cup of sugar. It should be great for diabetics. I'll post more when we get to harvest some of it.

We have tons of stevia stocked for shtf and it tastes like sugar and has no stomach/allergy issues and no bitter aftertaste
We have an herb garden in front with stevia. You have to keep it watered. It regulates B/P also and has been approved by the FDA as a sweetener. Basil, oregano, dill, parsley, and fennel and cilantro finish out the beds.
