Question Help with Mark III scope mounting

I went with my dad to the gunshop today and he just got a new Ruger Mark III along with a Muller Holosight. The smith in the shop mounted it and then went for the boresight. When he adjusted the holosight all the way to its lowest elevation, it was still too high. He then got another boresight out to make sure it wasn't it, and it said the same. So then the smith put on another holosight and found the same problem.

Right now, he had to put 6- 1/1000th metal shims under the back of the rail to get it close. My dad doesn't like the shims, so... is there something else we can try to get it on target???? Any suggestions appreciated!

Sounds like he's not using the right mounts. Did he use this rail, or something different? :

I'm like your dad, just say no to shims! I'm sure that there are proper mounts for the holosight out there, just have to do some digging. Was the guy an actual gunsmith, or just a guy that worked the counter at a gun store? If not, find yourself a good gunsmith and he can point you in the right direction.

Good luck!

He used the scope mount that came with the gun factory from Ruger. And I'm not really sure if the guy is a certified "I went to the school" smith. He's always done my work and I've never had a problem with it. He's the owner of the shop and I always just assumed he had gone to a gunsmith school. But now that you bring it up, he may have just learned what he does over the years.

My dad left the gun with me for the time and asked me to find a solution for it. I'll be running it out to the "certified" smith at Gander Mountain tomorrow if I can't find a fix myself. Only problem there is that the guy I liked to use left and they just hired a new one.... The other guy gave me a discount.

As mentioned above, you might have the wrong mount and need a different one.

Or, the boresighter/s they had weren't centered.

By that I mean, some laser boresighters when inserted into the barrel, if you take the boresighter and hold it at specific spot on a wall and then turn it, it makes a circle around the point your aiming it at. Some have adjustment screws while others don't. If you have one that does this and no adj. screws, get a new one and check it out before you use it. If you get a bad one, you take or send it back.

Remember, they're only to get you on paper. You will, or your dad will still have to take and make 3 or 5 shot groups to fine tune/dial it in...

FWIW, stay away from any universal boresighters as well as the SSI brand.

Laserlyte and Bushnell's are good. I have 2 Laserlytes and one Bushnell. Laserlyte I had to get the one for .17 also as the other two only start at .22 cal..

Make sure to use decent ammo. And make sure to use the same ammo for sighting it in. Don't mix and match. Find one that works and stay with it. Like other guns, they all will have one maybe two brands that will work best. You need to play around and find which one/s...

Federal value pak is good for plinking and CCI mini mags are good for all around hunting. Elly is great for match shooting. There are others good for hunting and plinking, but those are the ones I've found work best for me in what I have to shoot .22 with. Remington is very dirty IMHO.

Good luck and congrats on the MK III.

You need to find a different rail that provides additional elevation to the rear of the mount for your holo. Look at Brownell's.

I know Brownells makes tilted rails for such things, Swede's suggestion is a good one. I was having a similar issue with my AR sighting a backup holo in for very close shooting and found a tapered rail there.

I am interested what comes of this, my Mark III is by far the most accurate pistol I have ever owned. It's just sick, outshoots my buddy's high dollar "whatever it's called" target pistol every time.
