I like working with this one best.

We Get the Kiowa sometimes too.

It is hard to see us sometimes, so he gave him a buzz before he got too close..

I love my job sometimes. We fly in on other birds most the time and I never do get a chance to take pics of them, oh well....

So far as I know, they're flown by Britain, France, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, and maybe either Kiwi's or Aussie's.

I flew them while on exchange to the Royal Navy. In the US Navy, I flew the TH-57 (Bell JetRanger) and the SH-3 SeaKing, neither of which I really cared for. I've flown (briefly) the UH-60, SH-2, AB-212 (version of the Huey), and the AS-350B Astar Ecureuil (French for squirrel and quite appropriate for its flying characteristics).

The Lynx could do things I've seen no other helicopter do. It's overpowered, very aerobatic, and can be armed for a bunch of different missions. Since I left, things have changed and they toned down the maneuvers a little bit because of accidents and material failures some of them exhibited. It sure was fun while it lasted.

You have got to love the Sh1tter. Great bird. Although I prefered to ride in the Super Stallion varient. Though riding in any bird is better than walkin.

I never was a fan of Frogs. Had a bad experience in one many moons ago.

The 60s were pretty nice too. Now all I get to ride in is a S-92

I didn't know this thread was still around. Well, like I said before, my favorites have to be the machines that I flew in during time of war. Most of my flights were in Marine CH46E Sea Knights when I was in western Iraq. A "close second" in numbers of flights were aboard Marine CH53D Super Stallions. The "distant third" in numbers of flights were Army UH60 Blackhawks. Most flights were at night with quick landings and take offs in near total darkness. The pilots and crews in all of my helo flights were great. The below image is of Sea Knights in Afghanistan. They could just as easily be some of the machines I flew in while I was in Iraq in 2006/07. There were originally 660 CH-46 Sea Knights built from 1964 to 1967. They served in every war since the Vietnam War. Today, almost half of them are still in use, but they will all be replaced by about 425 tilt-wing V-22 Ospreys; not counting the Ospreys destined for the Navy and Air Force. They are truly classic machines that have served the Navy and Marines well.

When I read on an earlier thread how tall you are, I can imagine you had to duck to get in while on the ramp of the 46. As for the Super Stallion, you're right, it is a good machine. Fast, big and ...reasonably... comfortable.

When the crew chief doesn't up the top all the way. PITA to jump from those little things.

Funny you should mention, but the Senior Chief who worked for me is about 6'2" and when we were all rushed off of a -46 on our ship because of a potential fire from a hydraulic failure, he almost had his head removed. Those birds got a lot of use, but I never trusted them. Always afraid of the synch shaft breaking so the front rotor would meet the back rotor. Probably just being paranoid. After all, the ones I flew weren't any safer.

Welcome aboard Cobra-gunner. You might have been one of those Whiskey escorts that shadowed our 46 and 53 flights in western Iraq. If so, it was good to have you around then and now.

This is a easy one for me. It would have to be the one shooting the the guys that are trying to kill me. If you are a Combat flyer and you read this post thank you for your service to this Nation and to helping keep me and my family free. God bless you and the rest of the service men and women who put it all on the line.

Thank you

Talking

My only flight in a chopper was when I visited San Francisco while at Mare Island Naval Base for training. It was a civilian Bell JetRanger, taking a photo tour around Alcatraz Island. Had a fat broad (out-weighed ME, and I am a Big Boy!) sitting next to me on the rear benchseat. The pilot banked the bird to the right, me on the right side - and I was praying to the Good Lord to NOT let that door pop open - I was being squeezed hard against it!!

Twice on my Navy ship I was supposed to be flown by helo to another ship to work on their office computer - seems I was the only schmuck in the Battle Group who had trained on that particular computer (Lexitron)..... But both times, the flight got scrubbed - once because the little Frigate didn't have her fantail clear enough for them to winch me down. THAT would have been exciting, I'm sure! Went over by Mike Boat later - hated it. Wish I could have flown!

The AH-64D is one fierce beast. Actually the AH-64 is one fierce beast, Longbow model or not.

UH-60 gets my vote

But I'm biased cause my boy works on them. Got back from Iraq last July and is currently stationed in Alaska.

UH-60 I've got some time as a wrench bender and a crew chief with this helicopter at a guard unit in Tulsa, OK and was quite pleased with it. FYI Its tail also folds! I'm out of the army now, but know an engineer who's currently working on some type of M-60 prototype aiming and firing software. I guess my job as a crew chief is like an old train caboose, some day replaced by a flashing red box.

I used to turn wrenches and fly on the MH53's. Big pile of crap but they were safe if you went down hard. "if it ain't leaking something is wrong"
