Definitely not here in AZ. I doubt it is legal in any state, but I won't say for sure as I don't know. The license is a good investment for the year though. I say go get your license and forget about it.

Doing so in Wisconsin would result in you paying way more than the cost of the license into DNR coffers!

True sportsmen go by the rules. As for me, since I'm over 65 (actually 71) I'm not required to have a fishing permit in Missouri. But...for certain game fish such as trout, I'm still required to buy a trout fishing stamp.

They may have chanced the law by now. But twenty years ago when I was in Florida, residents there didn't need a license, as long as they were in their home county and not using a reel; it was considered subsistence fishing rather than sport fishing.

You'd be surprised how many fish you can haul in with an old 12 foot cane pole.

In Florida you had better have a license unless you are a Florida resident fishing from land.

Here in NJ you need a license and a trout stamp if there are trout in the waters your fishing, wether or not you are fishing for them.

In Idaho and Montana, if you have your line in the water without a fishing license, they will fine you $75 on the spot, even if you don't have a hook on the end of that line!

Does that mean I gotta stop using a bulldog on the end of my line instead of a hook, when I'm after catfish?

It usually works pretty good: if a channel cat or bullhead comes along, the bulldog grabs it and hangs on, until I take a rolled-up newspaper and make him spit it out. If a big old flathead comes along he chomps the bulldog instead, and hangs on until I take a baseball bat and make him spit the dog out...

I believe here in sunny Florida, very young kids and old geezers don't need a license for fishing from the land (pier, bank, etc.) - but I don't recall the ages involved. Me, I need the license, or I risk losing truck, boat, rod, everything! Not worth saving the cost of the license!

In NJ if you ar 16-69 you need to purchase a license. There are some exemptions i.e. Disabled vet, blind and a few others, they can get a free license.

In California, people 16 or older need a fishing license--even to net minnows or take crawdads. Interestingly enough, people can fish off public piers all they want, without a license.

Here's the exact wording on the Department of Fish and Game website:

Anyone 16 years and older must have a fishing license to take any kind of fish, mollusk, invertebrate, amphibian or crustacean in California, except for persons angling from a public pier in ocean or bay waters. A license is required to take reptiles, except for rattlesnakes.
