Just about every AK 47 or AK 74 you run across these days is a parts kit built on a US made receiver. If it's not done right you will end up with problems...Century Arms is famous for questionable built AKs. The Polytech AK 47s on the other hand were completely built in China as as export model...semi-automatic rifle instead of full auto. So there isn't really any question about how well they work.
But thanks to former President Bill Clinton, he signed into law banning arms imported from China. So you have a some what limited supply of PolyTechs and Norincos for collectors. You combine that with the Obama factor and you got people asking First Born prices.
One more thing that really isn't that import to some but to others is everything. The BATF banned the importation of AK 47 barrels. There is a company called Green Mountain re-producing the AK 47 barrel but it's NOT chrome lined like an original barrel. This means a lot of your newer built AK 47 kits are not going to have a chrome lined barrel. The polytechs on the other hand came with factory chromed which adds to the demand.
Now blaster rifles in general are just insane. A bottom of the barrel WASR10 is running around 800.00 which is about what a Polytech ran before the election. Heck, a WASR10 underfolder was selling as high as 2400 there for a while

I think if I was looking to get something I would pick up a Saiga and convert it. They make a fine rifle and I believe it's still some what affordable. That or an AMD, JGSales.com was selling AMDs for around 600.00 if I recall. It's always good to check back with them guys and see what they have on hand.
