I finally got the chance to take my Judge down country to my brother-in-laws secluded property on the Fourth. Primers "set back" on Win. 000 B (2.5") loads; lead 45 Cowboy loads "keyholed" at 15 yds., but hit dead on at closer ranges, and from about 3 feet, #9 shot was all over the paper, tho it was a nice even pattern.
Now I have seen for myself that this is a "bad breath" distance gun; which is fine.

Most pistol fights happen at short distances...the Judge just makes it more likely that you will survive and the other guy will be seeking a good hearse.

My question to you, or anyone, is what about hot +P ammo like Cor Bon Colt .45 long, 335 gr loads? I am concerned about the thin cylinder walls between rounds in chamber. I have the Judge magnum (3" x 3"). I have read pro & con posts on other boards. I just want to play safe. I have range fired .410 000 buck, slugs, #6, #4 both 2 1/2 and 3" and Colt .45 long Cowboy loads at 250 & 255 gr with no problems. My range tests convinced me that the 000 buck is my choice for personal protection but I back them up with 2 colt .45 rounds.

If you want to play it safe, I'd stick to the federal 4-pellet buckshot load and the standard pressure .45 colts. There are "heavy" versions of these you can use as well. I doubt the .45 Colt +P would blow up the gun, but I haven't used any of them. You might e-mail or call Taurus or the ammo manufacturer for definitive guidance (Buffalo Bore is really good at responding to e-mail for customer service).

I think Sgt. K has shot +P rounds in his, but I don't shoot +P rounds (even the Corbon which I think are milder than the Buffalo Bore) in mine. I stick to the (for the 2.5" versions I have) standard pressure .45 colts and the Federal 000 4-pellet buckshot load (which is the BEST buckshot load I've seen so far). Depending on the circumstance I either alternate 000 buck and .45 colt, or go #4 birdshot, 000 buckshot, colt, colt, 000 buckshot. The public defender is really kind of neat and can also function as a snub nose .45 Colt revolver for those who don't want to go with the buckshot.

I think the Buffalo Bore Standard Pressure Heavy .45 Colt gives me plenty of power and the recoil is managable--a 255 grain Keith at 1000 fps (admittedly a little less from the 2" PD) does everything I'd want from this gun. If I need more, I likely need a .44 mag or a rifle. Here's a link:

EDIT::::sorry I missed the 3" version; same as previous for the .45 Colt but I do use the WW 5-pellet 000 load in my 3" Judge. I think the Federal 4-pellet load patterns a little better though so you might experiment and see which works best in your gun.
