In general, NM is pretty laid back on gun laws. I'm not too familiar with Alamogordo, but my mom and stepdad live in a mountain town very near there. It's a pretty small town, and a good number of people carry the survivalist/conspiracy theorist mentality (including my mother and stepdad). The town is also near White Sands Missile Range (an army base) and of course White Sands (the park) itself. It's also home to a very nice space museum. Wonderful Mexican food, too.

You can walk down main street with a rifle over your back and most nobody would care. You would probably get stoped for some reason by the police but it is "legal". Most people just don't do it for obvious reasons though. You can shoot on most if not all BLM land out in the desert as long as you pick up your stuff and have a good backdrop. Alamogordo has a very good space museum, a small college which is an extension of New Mexico State University, a small zoo, and other neat stuff. It is very close to Holloman Airforce Base which judging by your avatar, that is the reason you are going there I assume? You are about 15min from the whitesands national monument, 30min to cloudcroft, 45min to Ruidoso and the Ski Apache ski hill, and an hour or a little more to Las Cruces and El Paso, TX. I think Alamogordo is a good little town and it is close to the mountains and outdoor activities. The good thing about the Lincoln forest is that dirtbikes and ATV's are allowed in most places. You can still get peace and quite camping up there but there are many other places in the state to go.

Some of the state taxes are a little high and some of them are low. I think people are asking too much for homes right now but maybe it will come down in a year or so. Most of the people are friendly except for a few and most people are not too great at driving. However, the mexican food is excellent and I wouldn't eat it anywhere else, maybe even including mexico. Ha.

I don't know what the night life is like in Alamogordo, if any, but you could always go to the casino in Ruidoso for some fun.

Anyway, I hope you like it here, let us know how it turns out. I live in Las Cruces by the way.

As a former N.M. resident

there are good points but watch out for speedtraps and stange taxes on various items.

No kidding! They installed red light and speeding cameras at four intersections here. They also changed the speed limit right before the intersection and reduced the time for the yellow light. I am going to see about getting some of that license plate spray. I got a license plate cover that blurs the numbers but it does it too well. I am afraid I will get pulled over for an "obstruction of the license plate" or something stupid like that.

Onate HS.

When on the highway, be very careful driving through small towns. Often, their only source of revenue is the corruption of the police in nailing out of towners.

Don't buy a piece of really heavy construction

equipment such as a bulldozer in New Mexico. They will tax you to death.

Crazy though it sounds, I know of people who drove to Amarillo/Lubbock/Odessa to buy equipment then drove it in to New Mexico at night. Odessa buyers would go to Kermit then over the state line into Jal and then to their home cities.

And, no, I'm not going to name names.

+1
Very true. There is a town just north of Alamogordo, Tulorosa I think, that you must drive the speed limit unless you want to be stopped.

I agree with everything Cremley said, except for one thing his description implies. Alamo is not in the mountains. During the summer, you will want to go to Hades to cool off. The Tularosa Basin give's a whole new definition to hot.

It is at the base of the mountains. Ruidoso and cloudcroft are a quick drive into the mountains. I should have been more clear.

No offense, but a cop doing his job is somewhat different than a corrupt cop.

Also, if you'd ever lived in such a town, you'd get pretty tired of you Big City boys blasting through town, endangering little kids, old ladies, and invalids because you're in too big a hurry gettin' to your next big town. I've seen semis go through Carrizozo at 70 MPH, and wonder what would happen to Ida Mae Johnson if she missed the Stop sign in her '63 Studebaker Lark at the same time that hauler was there.

I can tell you - they don't want you to drive slow just so they can get a better look at your pretty face.

Again - no offense intended. Not a great way to introduce myself around here but I thought it important.

I think most of us can agree, it is just when you get pulled over doing 46 in a 45 that ticks us off. Going 70 in a 55, in a semi, should be punishable.

Kemosabe - don't misunderstand, I have nothing against cops as a whole. Figure, my dad was one for awhile. However... it is sometimes painfully obvious that a person is being singled out... and ultimately, if a cop says you were speeding, and you say you weren't... well, it's your word against his.
