I know alot of you guys around here like scout mounts, due to there ease of installation and the abundant supply of inexpensive EER scopes. So I decided I'd make one and give it a try. In staying true to my oridiginal mount it had to be a see through design so you could still use your iron sights. I made 3 proto-types one for the 91/30,M44, and M39.The mount for the M39 needs some work as it did'nt hold zero good enough for me.
But the Russian mounts worked Killer! The base has a built in peep sight that is adjustable for elevation, windage is adjusted with the front sight.
Once the base is sighted in,mount the rail and your scope. I used the peep as a co-witness to sight in the scope,Fastest scope sighting I've ever done. I've never been much of a scout scope guy, partly due to a bad experence with the "flee-bay mount",but this mount has changed my mind on scout mounts. I'm sure I'll be making more of these as well as the oridginal "jmeck mount". Ive got some pics of the targets and mount below, the targets were shot at 50 yards. Wanted to shoot at 100 yards but we run out of time. I'll shoot the 100 next time, maybe then I'll have the bugs worked out on the M39 mount.
What holds it steady in the rear sight? I don't see anything like set screws.
Same question here too. Is the scope mounted a little high? Is it comfortable to shoot as far as head position on the stock cheek? Or does it feel like your neck is stretching? Can it be made shorter, and still utilize the hole for the peep sight?

It is locked in place with allen set screws simular to the "fleebay mount, only better executed. It is also recessed in the rear sight spring channel for better latteral stability. As far as scope height I feel its fine, definately alot lower than a PU mount. Of course you need to keep in mind that scope height is very subjective and has many varibles including the size and shape of ones head. Also the Mosin stock has a very small comb and some guys feel anything higher than the iron sights is not very comfortable.I could mill 1/16-1/8 inch off the top to lower it,but I don't think that would matter much. If cheekweld is an issue I'd recomend a
lace on cheekpad.
How is it adjustable for elevation? Will you be adding a "click knob"?TCA
It is adjustable for elevation with the allen set screws,it pivots on the rear sightleaf pin. No click knob like on a Williams Peep Sight. You need to set it for the yardage you want before mounting the scope,as once the scope is mounted it would have to be removed to readjust the peep elevation, but hey, you still got a scope and iron sights. I'd set the peep
for 50-100 yards and use the scope for 100+ yard shots.
I gotta admit, it's a clever design. Kudos to you, jmeck! May you make lots of $$ on your mount designs. Maybe you could give your G&G pals a freebie to "field test" it... (hint, hint)

Thanks for all the comments guys, and some good questions on its design.
I hope to have some of these ready for sale on gunbroker and maybe eBay in the next couple of weeks.
Maybe something like a Duracoat? Pretty sure bluing only works right on steel.
Duracoat,Good idea Gandog, I've seen that in gunmetal blue. Spray it on and bake it for around an hour or so. I know it sticks to aluminum real good because I've seen a bunch of AR's painted with it. I'll check into that.
