Weapons for my up-coming alaska trip.

I was lucky enough to get invited to alaska to bear hunt. My question is if my weapons will be up to spec. I recently picked up a Marlin GG 45/70 and was planning on taking that and my Rem 700 .30-06. My cousin has hunted up there for a few years now and told me that shots are rarely longer than 150 yds or so. I plan on loading the .06 with a 200gr paritition over 47 grs of varget. Should give me about 2500fps. Any info would be greatly appreciated.. I am also picking up a taurus tracker .44 mag for a oh sh%* moment.

I do swear By the .300 Win Mag and the 45-70 (for close in work) on Bears !

The 30/06 will do OK on most 8 ft. and smaller bears and Black bears !
Now if you run into "Freight Train" the 14 Ft. Grizzly Bear...HIDE ! LOL
You will look at your guns and realize they aint Quite big enough !!!
And file the front sight off that Taurus....

Sorry to be PC, but do you really need weapons for an Alaska hunt? I can understand hunting rifles and firearms but are the bears and other animals going to be shooting back? Sorry, The anti-gunners will use anything they can to fuel their fire. Watch what you post (i.e. sniper rifle that is really a long range target rifle and a weapon that is really a hunting rifle).

If you don't file it off at the very least have a jar of Vaseline handy. I would think both rifles you described would work fine within reasonable distances.

I doubt that the rifles will do much of anything, myne seem to be lazy,it,s the shooter that carries the responsibility in my case. sam.

My wifes' cousin works the fishing boats out of the Kenai and off Kodiak and Afognak. He says he is going to get a hunt arranged for our family on either Kodiak or Afognak for blacktail deer. If he gets it arranged I will take my .30-06 Remington with some stout 180's in case of angry Brownies.

If I were going on a bear hunt up there, I would get a 338 Win Mag. But, if you are comfortable with the 06 and 45-70, you should be able to get the job done. Also, you should make some hand loads for the Gov. Much better than the anemic factory loads.

You're not PC, just off your medication. Call the Pharmacy and get those prescriptions your doctor sent in for you.

Moosemike- If you go deerhunting on Kodiak, Montague or Afognak you WILL see bears, BIG bears !! About 2 minutes after you drop your deer, they're gonna show up to that "dinner bell" you just touched off !!

A 240gr Woodleigh Protected point traveling at 2500fps out of an 30-06 with a SD of .361 is a real freight train and will let air in one side and blood out the other on the biggest bear.

While it Might let the air out of him , he is going to eat you before he goes completely Flat... Thats the problem. If it doesnt Knock him down it will be several seconds or more before the Bear even knows that he has been hit , because if he is charging you, he is so pumped on adrenaline that the Blood Pressure will have to drop 75% before his Brain starts shutting down and since he is on all fours with his head down , the Blood does Not drain as fast as something standing on 2 legs...5-7 seconds is all that bear needs to rip your face off and crunch up a bunch of your bones.
It has even happened to guys carrying .375 H&H Mags etc...
