I was just reading Wikipedia. According to an article there, General Billy Mitchell stated to Congress in 1935 "I believe that in the future, whoever holds Alaska will hold the world. I think it is the most important strategic place in the world."

Apparently, he was talking about the fact that Pacific 'Great Circle' transportation routes by sea and air are within reach of Alaska. If modern military strategists think the same way, it would take a complete meltdown indeed for the US military to let Alaska go its own way....

My Dad never talked about his wartime service until I was retired from the military as well. He mostly talked about his lost friends and Leyte Gulf.

Mine also,30 months in the Alaskan Theatre,most of it on Amchitka.An Uncle on my Moms side was one of those 4000 casualties on Attu.He never talked much about it afterwards.
