I put in for D17 (Mojave Desert) first preference zone in the drawing because the DFG printed stuff said that zone would be a draw zone this year. Ooops. Not so, Fish and Game Commision didn't get their act together and D17 was NOT a draw zone, despite what they printed. I discovered this like so: About 4 weeks ago, just before the application deadline for the draw, I received my tag for my second pref zone, D14, with a note stating D17 was sold out. Huh? The drawing hadn't happened yet. I would receive no pref point because my 1st pref zone was not a Premium or Restricted zone. Well, I raised a bit of a stink with DFG about the disparity between what they said and what they did with and they agreed to put me back in the draw with X9A, a draw zone in the beautiful eastern Sierra, as my first choice and D14 second if I would send my tag back. I sent it back and I got my new D14 tag 2 days ago and should receive a pref point for not getting zone X9A. They don't post the pref points until September. Should I not get the pref point, I promise big trouble in the People's Republik.
D14 means San Bernardino National Forrest. It never sells out.

I feel for you. I doubt it's a feasible plan or idea for you, but man, what a royal bummer for you.

It's one thing to have your tag and it goes unused, but another to not even get a chance!

I have considered going out of state but the cost of an out of state tag in some of our neighboring states are pretty hefty and in some cases are limited draws as well. This is one of the main reasons I have wanted to move out of Nevada. While we have some of the largest Trophy's when it comes to Mule deer and Elk the chances of drawing for said Trophy is very slim. If you do draw and are unsuccessful you have to wait 5 years for Bull Elk. If you are lucky enough to get a Bull then you have to wait 10 years before you can enter the drawing again. For deer it's not quite as bad but the average time it takes to draw Buck deer tag is 5 years. For doe it's a little better but the bad thing is you can not submit for either sex. It has to be one or the other. It is quite frustrating to say the least.
The one thing we can get over the counter here in the state is Couger tags. We are allowed two per year and they can be hunted pretty much year round. When applying for your other game tags they ask if you would like to add a Cougar tag. I have mixed emotions about hunting them but I think I will go ahead and buy a tag and if i'm lucky enough to see one while out hiking I might take it. I don't think that I would pay for a guided hunt.

Same problem here in Az.The Peta folks draw as many tags as possible to keep the real hunters from drawing tags.I gave up on Arizona deer and went to Nebraska.Out of state lic, game stamp, either sex deer tag and a doe tag $361.Plus they threw in a bonus doe tag.Turkey tags are $86 this year I think and you get 3 birds.Deer and turkey seasons also run together this year.Plus Pheasants if you want.I hunt private land in southern nebraska but there is lots of public lands to hunt. I killed a really nice Buck opening day last year I,ll try to post a pic. No drawing just a straight online purchase. E-mail if you want some more info.

| PETA problem
Re: PETA folk buying unused tags: one would think that the various DFGs would be able to solve that problem. They determine how many deer they want harvested and based on the prev years success % do the math and issue the appropriate number of tags so that that % will yield the appropriate harvest.
The more tags anti-hunters buy the more $$ into the DFG and still the appropriate number of tags are issued. I'd call that WIN-WIN for DFG and hunters (and likely for the game animals too if they are being properly managed) and a LOSE for the PETA. Just thank them for their contribution.

Bob they do something to the effect. They go over the previous years harvested numbers and do herd counts and base how many tags can be issued. The problem is they just couldn't know for certain how many actual hunters were to get tags and the population could suffer if they were over hunted. I despise PETA. They would much rather see animals die of starvation and over graze lands.

Pat | The thing I hate the most about AZ is you need to wait as late as August to find out if you draw.
Of course they cashed my checks as soon as they got them a couple of months ago and all the interest goes to them... I'm sure that has nothing to do with the long wait to find out if you drew anything.
