Just got my SOG catalog today (was begining to think NRAJOE did get them to cut me off) they had this rifle for sale...$1649.00 (ouch)....never heard of the 50cal Beowulf....seems to be a 45/70 cartrige based round....but rim removed and redesigned... has anyone seen one of these? Shot one of these? Seems intresting...a little rich for my blood but who knows I got 2 lottery tickets in my pocket

I saw this gun in Rifle Shooter. It is one sweet system. All I know about it is that the U.S. Coast Guard is adopting it as a hand held boat stopper. That should tell you something about the power it generates!

Don't know anything about .50 "Beowulf", but it sounds familiar. A company called Tromix (www.tromix.com) has been making ar-15 uppers that fire .50 Action Express, .44 mag, and a few other big-bore calibers for a few years. They really look like a lot of fun, and if you're willing to go out and buy your own lower reciever I think their systems are considerably cheaper than $1600.... I don't know about mags though, almost certainly limited to 10 rounds. That thing about single-stacking in .223 mags is neat. It's kinda fun to observe all the little tricks manufacturers come up with to skirt that stupid ban. Of course, I'd gladly forgo all this entertainment value if it meant magazines larger than 10 rounds were reasonably priced.

The .50 Beowulf uses extended length 50 AE brass as a base then they turn the rim down to either .308win size or 7.62x39mm size. There was an article about it in gun world a few months ago. It looks awsome.

I received my Alexander Arms upper assembly about 6 weeks ago. Barrel is 16-inches with an E2 handgard. Came completely assembled, ready to install on any AR-15/16 lower, with one 7-round magazine. I would like to tell you howell it shoots, but, Alexandar Arms has tied up all the brass and parts so there is no third party support. Brass is hard to find and expensive when you do find it. I called Alexander Arms and queried them about this, but, they didn't seem to care much. They did, however, offer to sell me 2 boxes (40 rounds) of loaded ammunition for $52.00 or so. Brass is manufactured by Starline in Missouri. I paid them a visit early this spring and querried them on 50 Beowulf brass. They told me that they were under an exclusive contract by Alexander Arms and could not sell any brass to the public. Alexander told me that there were now two brass manufacturers with the second on being Lapua. If you want a 50 Beowulf and have the brass or are willing to wait for the brass I will sell you mine with a set of dies for $1,100.00

When I ordered the 50 Beowulf I also ordered a 458 SOCOM barrel (uppers were'nt available at the time). The barrel came in in about 8 weeks and i built my own upper. The only modification that had to be made to a standard 223 upper was the ejection port had to be opened up to allow that monster case to pass (same case as the 50 Beowulf except necked down to 458). Brass for the 458 SOCOM is also manufactured by Starline and is available. If I remember correctly 250 rounds was around $195.95. The 458 SOCOM shoots the same weight bullets as the 50 Beowulf (300-600 gr.). It is truley a joy to shoot, but, just a tad brutal. All parts are available for the SOCOM at regular prices. Barrel was the most expensive item. Bolt and bolt carrier was no more expensive that one for a 223. The flash suppressor for the 5/8-24 threaded barrel was over $100.00 so I purchased one for a 6.8 SPC and milled it out to 0.472. Works great. Since the 458 SOCOM uses a standard 458 diameter bullet just about any bullet that you can load in a 45-70 can be used. The only thing that you have to watch is OAL. You do not want to exceed the max length.

It is my understanding that both of these weapons are currently being tested by the Army in the sandbox. And, that their intended use is to stop car bombers with a single shot (through the windshield) which can not be achieved with a 223 (5.56).

The 50 Beowulf looks like it would be a fun gun to shoot but Alexander Arms has it too tied up. You are better off with a 458 SOCOM.
