VIABILITY of the 17 hmr as a CoMbAt and SHTF rifle

I have a 17 hmr lever action and i think its the best combat and shtf gun cause i can put 4 round in the head before you can put one shot of 45 acp .

Ultimately supremely viable gun, and by my calculations it should be lethal out to 250 yards on a human target, as long as you are attacked by slow moving naked people from a distance... of course if you just used a .22LR you have those kind of restrictions! =)

I'll give you a following if you can find a semi auto .17 HMR that is reliable and has a 50 round magazine

The viability of this supremely viable weapon is truly viable.

Talking

I counteract the .17HMR with a woven grass shield....

You need .22WMR for penetration......

Dang, you are ROUGH on your boss......!

It all comes down to bullet type. There are options available now that we didn't have in those heady early days of the .17HMR - way back then all we had was the wee .17 grain polymer tipped pellet that would disintegrate if you looked at it hard.
It would NOT penetrate a filled 2-liter water bottle. Blew the bottle up real good though!
Reckon they have some darned good turkey loads now though.....

Uhhhh..... If it works for you, cool. Personally, I prefer something a little (alot) more heft.

you guys kill me. I'm waiting for a pellet gun as the ultimate shtf gun.

The real shtf gun is whatever you happen to have that saves your ass.

He made this thread because he was frustrated at how many people are smart enough to realize that you don't need a full-auto Mini-14 to "survive."

I don't know. I looked at them on a few sights and they said it could but the pressure needed in the tank is asssstonomical I can't see pumping that up with a hand pump or my compressor!!!

on another note I do love my 17HMR and I think it could be a good gun, but with all my other guns it wouldn't be the first pick for protection from people unless I was going to snipe them (in the eye) from a hiding place. the nice thing about this round is if SHTF happens it would be a most valuable gun for getting food, not too destructive and quiet enough to not scare everything, plus with having other guns you don't have to waste your big ammo on critters to eat save them for protecting the food.
