Found out some interesting things this weekend

Found out 2 interesting things this weekend.
1. I can handle pain, very very well.
2. The wife while being a bit gaggy (seemed like she wanted to throw up for a few minutes but got it under control) can perform the necessary first aid to see me through.

Now here's the story for any of you that care to read it.

I often go to my folks house to hang out, and occasionally when I randomly show up they are not there. I have repeatedly asked them for an extra key in case I need to get inside while they are gone. But they usually hem and haw and tell me to climb the back yard fence to gain access to the back door (guarded by a 100lb boxer that loves family only lol).

So on Saturday, having nothing to do I go up there with the Mrs. and our 2 pups. We're sitting there for about 20 minutes eating lunch in the front yard, waiting for the folks to get home. My father who was going to be getting home the soonest was probably still an hour or so out, because he was helping someone move.

Well all of a sudden, I have to go to the bathroom. Now this is not like earth shattering need here, but a desire anyways lol. So I finally decide to climb the back fence and run inside.

Get to the fence and notice a couple things. 1 this is a poorly made fence, not many handholds for getting over with my big size 11-1/2 shoes. So I opt for climbing the gate, which is always locked but at least has a bar running across the middle for me to step on.

Go up the door. Throw my leg over. And realize there is no place to put my foot on the inside of the door. So in a fit of pure genius, I decide to just whip my other foot over and drop.

First thing I notice when I do this is that there is a tearing noise, and a little bit of pain from my nether regions. I hit the ground and look down. Pants are ripped (my first thought was, can't believe I ripped my pants). I get about 1/2 way to the door when I notice that the pain in my nether regions is increasing. Not unbearable yet, but definitely noticeable.

Get inside, and unlock the front door so the Mrs. can come inside should she wish to. And head to the bathroom, to A do my duty, and B find out how bad the (possible) wound is. Note the pain has been increasing this whole time, but I am still more than able to do what needs doing.

I get to the bathroom, drop trow. And this is when it gets interesting. Notice blood on my undies. Decide I need a more thorough check and put my hand down there checking for wounds. Bring my hand back up, and its covered in blood.

This is when shock sets in. Having been in shock before I knew the symptoms and knew what was happening to me. I quickly fish my cell phone out of my pants and call my wifes cell phone (she is still in the front yard). Tell her I am going into shock and need her in the downstairs bathroom.

She comes in and (I remember this quite clearly) asks if I stabbed myself in the leg when climbing the fence (she could see the blood everywhere) and I inform her that I stabbed myself in the thing between my legs on the fence.

She runs to the first aid kit, grabs a bunch of bandages, antibiotic ointment, rubbing alcohol, and medical tape. Bandages me up, while occasionally gagging (not instilling faith at all that my wound is ok).

We decide to high-tail it home to get the pups dropped off, and she can look at the wound again to see if I need to go to the hospital. 30 mins later we are home. She checks the wound, declares the need for a hospital and we are off. Get to the hospital fill out all necessary info. And 20 mins later get taken in to a room. 1-1/2 hours after that I finally get seen by a doc. Doc declares the need for stitches (got 12 stitches). I get moved to a new room and stitches are given. Time elapsed since incident, 3 hours. Bleeding the whole time.......had to keep asking for gauze to try and stop the bleeding. [Not impressed with the doc here, he should've hauled ass to get to me].

Doc finishes with the stitches, gives me my tetinus (sp?) shot and gives me a prescription for keflex (lots of keflex, just in case) and percocet. I have still to date (4 days later) not taken anything for pain and have kind of lived with it.

For all of those still with me and reading this story. I believe a couple of the main reasons I am still ok and not really bothered with the pain is because I have been in shock before, not only that but I have had the training to deal with emergency situations so I know how to shut down my brain and just do what needs doing when the time comes. The other reason I think I handled the pain so well, is because my instructor at the academy was nice enough to nail us all with OC spray and make us run an obstacle course, so we could still be somewhat useful while not 100%.

Hope you all enjoyed the story, and any sympathy for my misfortune is greedily accepted lol. Thanks for reading.

Wow, just think about the reactions you can get once someone brings out the old 'well you should see my scar' conversation - you should have them all beat =)

Glad to hear everything turned out okay, sometimes it can be near impossible not to overreact, sounds like you can mark yourself prepared.

Yep there's been many a Gilding caused by a barbwire fence. It better heal. We might have to take this to the prayer section. Makes you feel good to be prepared. Glad it wasn't the femoral artery. 3 mins ... she's rich. [joking]
Be careful dude. Next time the wife might have to do the surgery, too.

As the Queen mother would say, "Aris Unlimited, I dub thee Sir Numb Nuts".
Ouch, I have no sympathy but that story sure makes me cringe!
Really, I do have sympathy for you...sorta.
Hope you heal well and soon.

Well it wasn't a barbed wire fence that violated me so. It was just plain jain chain link. I got caught on one of the bars that keeps the chain link tight. So no cutting.......but tearing lol. As for the healing, I am doing ok. Stitches look good, and I am getting more and more mobility.

"Shock" is just one of those poor words that gets tossed around so much. I'm sure you were Surprised and the adrenalin was flowing that you were not in actual medical "shock". If you didn't received treatment until 3 hours after going into shock...you probably would have been dead...or pretty close to it. Just FYI. You certainly could bleed out from a wound in that area, may I suggest that next time you suspect your in "shock" that you call an ambulance or at least go straight to the ER.

Either way - Feel better and heal fast
