Hmm, the 'Pilots Knife' is one of my favorite style knives, but I would be wary of the manufacturer for the price. If it is surplus, it would be better used, but if it is new, it could be some sharpened piece of Chinese pot metal (I have fallen for too many poorly made import knives).
Unfortunately now that you have shown me a new web site, I think I am required to see if there is anything I need from them =)

Definitely determine if the product is "mil-spec" and not "military style" if you are looking for quality military knives. "Style" doesn't mean squat unless the price is greatly reduced or the quality is at least equal. Just my opinion.

That knife is not the "real deal." You could get lucky, but as far as I'm concerned the 17 bucks would be better spent on lotto tickets. I'm just not a fan of chinese import knives. For twice the price you can get a Military issue survival knife new in the wrapper at this link. I've never had enough money to buy nice knives, but the camillus survival knife was the best knife I've ever owned. I lost it while hunting about a year and a half ago. It made me sick. It was a good knife. US MILITARY PILOT'S SURVIVAL KNIFE - $35.00 : War Dog Militaria

When I graduated Infantry OCS in June '66, one of my first purchases was a Camillus pilot's issue survival knife. In Vietnam, a horse's ass lieutenant colonel demanded that I surrender it as in-country pilots couldn't get them because of production shortages and "leg lieutenants don't need them." I thanked him for his interest and suggested he do what I did: buy one at the Infantry School bookstore. I've seen lots of knockoffs since but Camillus will always be my preferred choice.
This one is a better deal. The one you cited just looks like a USAF pilot's survival knife. It's probably a ChiCom "monkey copy" made out of who knows what grade of steel and you don't want to bet your life on that. You don't skmp when it comes to survival items. This is the current US issue pilot's knife:
Ontario Knife company makes a fine knife. The do supply the government in some capacity, and they dont have all of the marketing that other more expensive knife companies (ka-bar) have.
I own the GI knife and its very well made. Check out their web site Welcome to Ontario Knife Company! . It will tell you all about em. Made in the US, about an hour south of me.
The knife Cyrano cited looks exactly like the knif I've got from Ontario Knife company, not the one for half the price.
