got one....

Ok, I signed up on this forum because I wanted to gain information on a Mosin Nagant.... learned a lot and was waiting the good opportunity to get one.
Well they can't be find around here....
So, I bought an Enfield....
$200 at the pawnShop, i got it out of the door for $150.
looks like it is a n4 MkI*
Looks like the stock has been cut at some point.
Numbers seem to match
the rifling is very sharp
Now since i don;t know much about this particular rifle, I guess i'll have tons of questions.
And the first one will be how do I take care of it... meaning, is there any particular points I have to pay attention.
Then how do I make it look nice. Stock is beat up with lots of dings
Then anything you guys can tell me about it will be welcome.
Just something strand from my little internet search.
The rifle is stamped S No4 MKI* on the receiver, with US property. That would tell me this is the Savage model made in the US right ? These marks are on top of other marks that say No4 MKI/3(F) FTR then a number (I guess serial number)
On the band of metal just above the trigger (don;t know how to call it) there is the same serial number and a B (internet says this is the mark of Birmingham factory UK)
So I am a little confused.
Just for my records, how can i tell the date of fabrication if possible ?
thank for your answers, and advices.
I'll take some pictures soon

Stephen welcome to the Enfields. My first suggestion would be to check the headspacing on the rifle. You can buy the guages through Midway, Brownells, or other distributers. If you want to take it to a gunsmith, I happen to know of two great ones in your area. I used to take several of my guns to them when I was living in Utah. They are brothers and are great all around guys. I will look up the shop and PM you the info if you would like.
The Head spacing is the first place I would start on looking the rifle over. As for cleaning up the stock goes, you can find replacement stocks on ebay or gunbroker for a decent price. Some of them appear to be in new condition as well.
Would love to see some pictures of your score.

Thanks for the Info, even though I am excited to go shoot I will probably take it to a gunsmith before.
Actually the stock does not bother me at all.
will see if I can get pictures

As for the price ? I am happy with it (basically was about $130) should I ?

Yes, of course post some pics! Sounds like a pretty good deal. If its got a nice bore, then it ought to be a good shooter. I recently shot my No4 Mk1 finally, and it grouped quite well at 100 yds shooting some of the POF milsurp.

You have definately got a Savage No4, which started life as a Mk1* and was then FTR'd (Factory Thorough Repair - or Re-arsenal to you Americans) By the Fazakerly factory in England (Near Liverpool) and modified to a Mk1/3, the main modification being the replacement of the trigger mechanism from being hung on the trigger guard to being hung on the receiver. This gave more consistent accuracy as in hot humid areas (swamps of the East etc) the woodwork swelled , in hot dry deserts the woodwork shrank and dried out both distorted the trigger guard , affecting the trigger and the pull off.

There should be a date (example 5/53 or 53 = showing May 1953 or just 1953) this should be just after the Mk1/3 (F) this is the date of the FTR.

The serial number will be on the butt strap and will look something like 13CXXX. Savage did not date (particularly) the later rifles but my 13Cxxx is 1942.

Nobody has yet been able to identify the B on the butt strap - it is thought it may be an inspectors mark. It certainly does not mean its a British rifle.

A few metal bits and some wood you could have that back in primo condition. Welcome to "Enfield disease". Enfields tend to breed when left unattended in the safe. I started with one, now it's four, what's next?

I am going to agree with Madrcatebuilder. I now have three and just picked up a
P-14 action and Barrel to build a rifle.

Some gunsmiths do not have headspace gauges for LE rifles.

Not many have the "CORRECT" headspace gauges.
I know I've said it before but the Enfield pre-dates the litigious society we live in today and the SAMMI specifications.
An Enfield (be it a No1, No4 or No5) has a 0.064" Go and a 0.074" No go.

Many a good rifle has been condemmed by using the SAMMI 0.067" and 0.070" gauges
