Sent my application in last week and so begins the long wait... Hitting the gunshow this weekend to check out the potential candidates. I am a .45 guy for the home, but I'm leaning towards a .38 or a very compact 9mm for concealed. Hitting my target is priority 1, reliability is priority 2, small enough to carry in shorts is priority 3 and cost is a close 4th. I'm leaning towards a Bersa Thunder or a KelTec. If $ were no object, I'd prolly go with a sig. Any reccomendations out there?

I've heard lots of bad on chatboards about the KTs though.

We have to wait 90 days after it's recieved by whom ever. But it finally came on the cheapest piece of flimsy thin paper they could print it on.
They recently made a change and now it is like a drivers licsens.

Virginia CHP

Virginia does a great job with CHP turnaround. I turned in my paperwork, which included my Army discharge papers that allowed me to waive the class and had my permit in 22 days. Hopefully the NRA can get nationwide carry laws passed one day that will standardize all the states to one fair system.

I've heard lots of bad on chatboards about the KTs though.

You didn't say which caliber Bersa or Kel-Tec. I have the Kel-Tec PF9. A little much for such a small pistol. Really determined by how it fits your hand & doesn't fit mine real well. Also, I prefer single action to double action. The Bersas are designed for carry with one in the chamber & the hammer down, so the first shot will be double action, but subsequent shots are single action. My wife owns a Thunder 380. I've shot it more than she has. It's a nice pistol. Her's is 7 + 1. Bersa has a 380 Plus out now which has 15 rd. mag. I wanted a larger caliber so bought their Firestorm Mini 40. It's also available in the Thunder. I really like it & have never had any issues with failure to feed or eject. I just recently bought the new Hi Capacity 9mm - 17 + 1 rounds. It's a really sweet shooting pistol. They also make it in a ultra compact which is the same size as my 40 caliber. The new 9 mms are fast being accepted as the best of the Bersas. I don't think you'll be dissatisfied with any of the Bersas. Most of what you've heard about Kel-Tec is from the early years of the PF9 as they did have some issues with it. But the new ones have been upgraded. I haven't heard anything bad about their P11 or their 380 P3AT, or what ever it's called. Really comes down to which feels best to you. If possible, see if the range where you shoot has them to rent & try them. Hope this helps & good luck with your search. The lokking is part of the fun.

P.S. After I posted, I see you did mention caliber - 9 mm. In that case, I definitely recommend the Bersa, but advise you it is not nearly as small as the Kel-Tec

Thanks for the advice mitchr. I'm looking forward to hitting the show this weekend and getting a feel for them. I'm still undecided between the .38 or the 9. It's probably going to come down to what "feels" right in my hand, on the range, on the checkbook and stuffed down my pants

We're in the same boat down here in Fl that Arkansas is in, 90 days... I've heard stories of it taking longer since BHO took office, but my understanding is that is no longer the case now our dept of agriculture handles the process. Here's hoping for a short wait!

Where does the law say you are limited to these calibers?

My sudden want to jump around like the old man in A Christmas story was so needed but alas I was on the throne so doing that would have ended distastefully. Anyways to make a long slightly disturbing story short, I got my CCW and I'm happier than a retard in a helmet store.
