dirty gun powder

today I reloaded some 12 gauge shotshells with winchester wst powder on top of winchest primers and they left alot of residue in the barrel. It left much more residue in the barrel than the storebought remington shells I have been shooting.

Unique used to burn verry dirty, but is better now.Hah! Bought some Santa Barbra 38 special years ago for a verry cheap price for a 250 battle pack and the stuff makes the blackest sooty mess on my pistol, often wondered what kind of powder they used, they are berdan primed and on the box say No Corosive they shoot good but talk about major clean up.

No matter what firearm you are using but especially handguns and shotguns,if there is a lot of residue left in the barrel,it is a sign the burn rate is too slow for load/barrel.The reason it soots everything up is because it moves the projectile out before all of the powder is ignited in the cartridge.Change the load or change the powder.A slower heavier load or faster burning powder will cure the soot problem. ,,,sam.

Only if DaTeacha is shooting it! (I doubt that a .22lr would get out of a 36"barrel) ,,,sam.

thanks for all the input, i thought that the powder may have gotten some moisture in it, but the can was sealed very well. also suspected the primers, but i had loaded some 20 gauges with the same primers and stored them in a waterproof box since then.
