I know the Ruger 10/22 can be modified a jillion ways to Sunday, but this is a mod I've never seen before.
Someone put a pair of 10/22s side by side and changed to barrels with a vented head shield. The trigger group is controlled by a cam and has a handgrip and trigger reminiscent of the M1919A4. It uses the standard curved 50 round magazines and sits on a tripod. It looks rather like the twin guns you sometimes see on Scarff rings on World War I two-seater airplanes.
The clerk told me this setup is fired by holding down the trigger and cranking the handwheel on the side. It seems to work like one of those Hellfire System cranks. The thing is a pair of semi-auto 10/22s that can be made to perform like a Gatling gun.
MSRP is $1,000.
I find it hard to believe a thing like this is legal in New York, not least because you'd need to find pre-ban 50-round magazines in pairs for it. But I was told it IS legal in this state, believe it or not, because the barrel lengths meed the legal standards and it is not a full-auto firearm. I also can't imagine what use you could put such a thing to except in a SHTF scenario.
Has anyone else seen one of these? Or fired one? I'm very bemused by this thing. It ranks high on my list of unusual firearms, but I would like to know what the performance of such a critter is.
Ive seen that in Cabelas and a few other catalogs it looks kool but besides that i think the cranking motion would be hard to deal with after long uses and keeping it steady as you crank it could also cause some troubles. Thats just my .2 cents but i guess i cant know for sure.
Calico made the kits in the early 80's for about $90 bucks, then you had to buy two 10/22's and bolt them all up together. I couldn't afford $90 plus another $250 for two 10/22's back then, I wish I would have bought a dozen kits , They also made them for the .30 carbines, using two .30 carbines with 30 rd mags would be cool!!
I've used a single with the crank. The crank gives you four shots per revolution. As long as you crank it by hand, it's a semi-auto and burn through a whole lot of ammo in a short time, raising a nice cloud of dust on a dry backstop. We had it set up with a bi-pod, and it was entertaining for a while, but in contest involving putting the most holes in a tin can in a given amount of time, a normal semi-auto beats the snot out of the crank. It might be more fun with that bi-pod equipped 10-22 based pistol, whatever it's name is.

I have drawings to build a .22 Gatling gun. As long as you hand crank it it's semiauto and you're OK. If you use a cordless drill to sping the crankshaft, it's full auto and you're in trouble. I expect the same would apply here. The magazines are another story.....pre-ban, post ban, banned, etc. Hey, it would be a fun way to make a lot of noise. Not very practical but, fun.

It might be fun with magazines from a state that does not have to cope with the Slick Willy Gun Ban that's still on the books here in New York. But yes, that Calico's kit is definitely what I saw at the gun shop today.
Looks like fun, but it will chew through ammo pretty quick in the set up you mentioned. I had seen videos of it on Youtube. Looks like fun, but not really practical for anything other than fun IMO. But, thats what .22s are about, having fun I guess. Its a creative design.

This design for two rifles has been around a long time
It seems to have a niche following. In a practical sense I don't think it is such a good idea but I will concede it has plenty of "wow" factor.
If you consider the price of the device, the two rifles, the magazines, and the speed at which you would burn up ammo it is a pretty pricey acquisition.
Yet I must admit I have never seen one used for sale.
We have one that is made to mount on the front of my willeys Jeep . I did not pay $1,000 for mine I had the clamp for the actions machined . It is one peice of aluminum that has two notches machined out of it for the actions and then a peice that goes over the other side of the action the make a sandwich . I also put wing nuts on the bolts for easy take off so you can take the gun's off in less than 5 min . Why did we build it ? 1) cuz its cool as hell 2) We used to use it when we were younger to chase coyote across the Flint Hills here in Kansas . It seems the older you get the less things like that seem as fun . I took out the 10/22's my son has one my brothers son has the other. We will have to get that thing rockin again . The boys are 13 and 14 so they are perfect ages to really like that. I had forgot all about it untell I read this thread . I will see if we can't get the "WHEELS OF DEATH " back together so I can post some pictures .

Are you allowed to shoot from a vehicle out there? That would be a good way to lose your gun and other hunting equipment in the vehicle, your hunting privileges for a long time, your vehicle, and a wad of cash in a lot of states.

My guess would be yes you are right teach but we were 18 and didn't have the sense god gave a piss ant . I don't think the mounting is illegal but shooting game with it would get your ass in a bind . But that was 24 yrs ago teach it was a whole differant world . The game warden here then was just one of the guys as logn as you didn't have 10 deer hangin in your barn they were pretty cool about things . For instance . When I was 19 my brother my cousin (now a cop) and I all got stopped for speeding and had way over our limit on catfish and bass in the bed of the truck. The
cop said " Give me them 3 big ones and you boys can go home . " We did and he never spoke another word of it . Them my freinds were the days .

They were advertised in Shotgun News for many, many years until the asault weapon ban took place then they seemed to disappear. it's only been in the past year I've heard a lot of talk about this system. I don't know if it is still the same manufacturer or someone else has picked up on the idea. originally they were fitted with the 50 round teardrop mags and later shown with the 50 round bannana double stacks. they sure looked cool but the price is close to what they were back then. at that time, almost 20 years ago, i think they were close to $800.
Cabela's '08 shooting catalog shows one on page 74. $400 and you supply the 10/22s. Right above the Gatling gun kit is a BMF activator crank for $20, not intended for hunting applications.
The Gatling kit is item number XX-22-7757.
