Ok guys I love the M1 it's a great war rifle, and a I'm sure it's a great target and hunting rifle too, but I'm forced to love it from affar with low low prices starting at only $700 or so. Well $700 is the lowest I've heard of anyone paying for one anyway.
I'm going to get straight to the point, and I don't want to offend anyone, but IMO those kind of prices are just outrageous for a 75 year old USED war rifle. If I had a high amount of disposable income I might buy one even at high prices. They are awesome no doubt about it, and I would rather have one of those than a built for hunting single shot bolt action .30.06, but why the outrageous prices? To be fair I think the prices of the 1911 are even more outrageous, I have heard they aren't even that accurate either.
So I guess my main question is why are these guns so expensive?
Again I mean no disrespect or insult to the M1 rifle or the people who buy them I simply want to know why the high cost(IMO).
The new ones made a few years ago by Springfield Armory Inc were even more expensive than the $700 you mentioned. The GI Garands are well made, shoot a powerful cartridge and are historical. People like to collect old historical items. Buying a Garand is alot better bargain than buying a dining room table.
Oh, .45's can be quite accurate.
LOL With age comes collectability and everyone prices them as such.That plus years of no availabilty on the market and a HUGE market for them by people who got all WW2 excited by Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan.
All good reasons. The Civilian Marksmanship Program has an excellent reputation for selling exemplary Garands that are rated in grades. Thats where I bought my Garand, a Springfield Armory service grade. Try here: CMP Home and click sales. But, with the new administration, comes a long wait. Many folks here can attest to their own CMP Garands, Springfield 1903s, and M1 Carbines. Check out the roll call thread, mine is the first one. You won't be disappointed with a CMP Garand. Their customer service is second to none.

U.S.military firearms have always been desirable especially from a collectors standpoint.You can't really compare the price they bring with other military surplus firearms,it's apples to grapefruit.In the fifties a new Winchester Model 70 was around $150 and at the time M1s were $125 surplus.They were never cheap.I can remember in the 70s if you wanted one and didn't want to or couldn't get one thru the DCM(you were only allowed one per lifetime) it was going to cost you around $500 if you could find one for sale.

I have 3 1911 and they will outshoot anything. They say “It’s the driver not the car”. Well, when it comes to the 1911, in my humble opinion, it is one of the best cars but you also need a good driver to drive it. The people who told you that the 1911 is not accurate, I don’t think they can drive.
I have shot a 1911 all my life. My Dad had one and my grandfather had one. Other than the accurized target pistols, those 1911 shoot better than any other pistol I have every owned. And I have owned a few!
There is just something special about a Garand.......

I wanted one because have used theM-1 Garand and Carbine in Combat in Viet-Nam in 1965. Many think that the M-1 Garand was last ued in the Korean "Police action' but the 'program that I was involved in used ONLY WWII weapons and I know from first hand experience what a great rifle the M-1 IS.

Not to be way off topic, but I was under the impression that Viet-Nam was also considered a "police action". I like how you said drink the Kool-Aid rondog, thats kinda what I was thinking, I'm just still not liking those prices, but to each his own. If I was a rich man I'd do it without thinking.
Good Garands are not cheap but the return on investment will be there. The CMP offers rifles that have been thoroughly cleaned, checked and repaired if needed. They offer Garands starting at 500 plus shipping for a field grade. The way I am looking at it, the return on investment on Garands will be better than the stock market right now.
But, don't count out other Mil surplus rifles. The SKS, Mosins, Enfields, Mausers and others are fun and economical to shoot as well! To me, the SKS is the next best thing to the Garand or M1 Carbine! JMHO.
