H&R question

I have been looking into getting a new gun, and I like the idea of the TC Contender pistol because you can change out barrels, but someone suggested to me that H&R makes a rifle that is similar to the TC. Is this true? If so what do they cost, and are they good quality rifles?

The NEF Handi rifles, look them up in this forum. H&R is bought , or has become NEF, New England Firearms, you can send in your reciever and get a lot of different calibers. Click on this link!

Yes..the Handi-rifle. You can get different barrels and if you get a rifle caliber to start with you can put shotgun barrels on it also. If you get a shotgun you can only put on shotgun barrels for it. I had one in .243 and sold it. I regretted it afterwards so I just baought one in 30-30 that I still haven't shot. I bought my 30-30 for $239 plus tax from one of my local dealers. I think the local Gander Mountain has them aroung $279. They are good rifles in my opinion. You can get them with wood or synthetic stock and some have open sights, but most just come with a scope base.

Check out this site to see what they have

Go to the Marlin firearms website

then you can see the single shot offerings. These are high quality firearms that can provide a great deal of satisfaction for a reasonable purchase price.

So when you want a new barrell do you only need to send them your frame and stuff so they can custom fit the barrell to your gun, and then you can switch it out whenever you want anytime after that, or do you always have to send the gun in to change the barrell out?

Also do you have to use a scope with these guns or do they come with sights?

After you send in the reciever to have it fitted to a new barrel you can swap between barrels anytime you want. All you do is remove the forend and the barrel lifts off. Some calibers come with open sights and some don't. According to the 2009 catalog I have the 30-30, 45-70, .500S&W, and the 45 long colt carbine come with open sights.

go2gbo.com, forums, H&R/NEF Talk has all your answers. I only have 13 of them now. Not that I like them or anything. There's only one word for them.....superb. You don't have to send your frame in each time you want a barrel. You can buy a barrel there privately and fit it yourself. The instructions are there in the FAQs.

I'm really thinking about one of the Handi-Rifles as they seem pretty neat. I know that it should be one shot one kill but that doesn't always happen in the real world. Does the lack of a quick follow up shot become a problem often?

Maybe a .204 Ruger, 30-30, 308 and 12 Gauge rifled slug barrel and muzzle loader would cover everything. Naw, I'd want 12 Gauge, 357, Mag, 44 Mag and 444 Marlin too. Man, this could make a $200 gun into a whole lot more quickly!

How is are the triggers on these things?

I've never had a problem with a quick second shot. I use the Allen 206 nine shot buttstock cartridge holder on all my Handis. I've converted all my Handis from ejector to extractor and it's still fast enough.....you're not duck hunting with it. The single shot encourages you to make sure your first shot is good.

Triggers are generally on the harsh side, but I prefer that for hunting. Hair triggers are for the bench, especially if you have to use gloves.

I enjoy my 223 H&R.

The contender is a bit higher on the quality/firt and finish scale I believe. This of course comes at a cost.

Our fellow member Seabee Scotty has a New Mossberg gun that Mossberg came out with some years ago that was similer to the Contender.
It is very well made and the gun can interchange shotgun and rifle barrels that Mossberg also came out with. For some reason Mossberg dropped the gun.

Scotty bought one when they came out with a 24" turkey barrel, 3.5" chamber.

Barrels can still be found on the net of differring calibers.
It is for sale I think, if anyone is interested. He has never shot the gun and it is probable a collector now.

He and I got on the net while we were on the telephone and found barrels for sale for the gun and the price he paid for the gun was less than there selling for now.

If anyone wants something different and rare contact Seabee Scotty...A.H
