Great information. Just because I don't hunt bear doesn't mean that I would venture into their country carrying a can of pepper spray.LOL Even if there is but a small chance of encounter I will feel much better carrying a 45-70.

I do live in Grizzly country and it reminded me, I've got to go get a fresh canister of Counter Assult.

Great post - thanks! Rumor has it there are a few grizzlies here in Colorado. DOW denies it but one of my employees and two friends (witnessed and related their experiences independently of each other) said they have seen a few grizzlies around Gunnison and south of Del Norte. There's enough critters that scratch and bite following me when I elk hunt. I hope I don't encounter a grizzly!

Well, my feeling on it is, if you live in bear country and can actually use the meat and\or other parts, go for it. If you live in Dallas, LA, Cleveland, etc. and want to kill a bear just because you want a trophy, I fart in thy general direction. This also holds true with the guys who travel halfway around the world to hunt lions, elephant, rhino, etc. and then talk about "going into harms way". That's like me stiffing the mafia on a fake drug deal for a thrill and then saying "they're out to get me". Sure they're out to get me, but it's MY FAULT! I love to hunt, but killing just for the hell of it doesn't float my boat, it should be for a purpose IMO.

Bear Spray?

I hope more of those jerks pack a can of Pepper Spray in Grizzly country.

It will help remove the stupid ones from the gene pool.

Are these the same people who sit down for a steak dinner and tell hunters how bad they are for killing Bambi or Bullwinkle?

So you're saying because someone like me lives in Pennsylvania I should not go to Alaska and hunt Brown/Grizzly bear? Or I shouldn't hunt the Big Five in Africa because I'm American? You're a jerk.

Do people eat grizzly bears?

I've had bear meat which was a bit greasy but I thought grizzly meat was tough.

So fair chase hunting in remote reaches is less ethical than fenced Texas deer hunts from enclosed treestands with beanfield rifles over a food plot? Why? Because you eat the meat you "harvested" in a controlled environment?

In some cases you can eat Grizzly Bear Meat , but most of the time it stinks to high Heaven depending on what the bear has been eating. If it is eating Grass and berries , the meat can be eaten and doesnt smell Bad. If it is eating Fish , Dead whales , and other animals or Garbage from the Dump the meat will stink Horribly.
We have a Need for More Grizzlies to be Harvested because they are eating Moose , Caribou, and deer at an alarming rate and Game populations are down in a Lot of areas to the point that hunts for Meat animals will be closed.
Alaskans have NO problem with trophy hunters coming up here and Getting a Grizzly Bear for their very Own....

Excellent story and enjoyed reading it. I would have to win a Bear hunting trip for me to go.
I just couldn't shell out the kind of money it would cost. But I'd love to one time.

What was also Interesting to me was the emphase's on enough gun. The man in the story pretty well got the issue across to me in regards to bigger is Best in regards to caliber and I agree.
If I were to get to go on a Grizzly Bear hunt I'd much prefer to have a caliber that can also take out an Elephant LOL...LOL

Yup...Anchorage is Loaded with Grizzlies. I especially love the people that put those tiny bells on themselves so they jingle when they walk or Jog.
Lets the Bears know right where to find them fast !!! LOL

Well, if you're ok with killing stuff just because you can. and aren't going to use the meat, then knock yourself out, it's just not my bag. I was raised to use what I kill and respect what I hunt. Thanks for the compliment.

One of MYpeeves is the Hunters on the Hunting channel's. Week after week they go all over the country killing game animals.
Have any of you ever thought about how many animals they kill to make a weekly show or in a years time ???.
I'm not against hunting, I hunt but I just have a problem with these same people over and over again killing game animals.
There should be a limit on how many they can kill. When you consider how many shows are just on the OutDoor channel that are hunting shows I feel there killing to many animals for ENTERTAINMENT.

Mooseman, if you guys need more grizzlies harvested then please tell the outfitters to drop their price. $15,000 to $20,000 prices them out of reach for most of us.

Man, if I could get paid to hunt all the time, THAT'S ALL I'D DO!!!!

Shucks, give me a show, I'd run around seeing what all i could take with a Marlin 25MN I'd even try a black bear!! (but I'd darn sure have my Desert Eagle as a backup..LOL)

I see no problem with it. My grandfather used to fish all the time when he wasn't shooting NFAA tourny's...he'd get the BIGGEST fish I ever saw, even though I'd catch more...he'd ALWAYS get the BIGGEST.

Old practiced hands get the trophy critters...young guys get more of the eatin-size...but someone's gotta do it

Just go to Anchorage...get on a 4x4 & go until you hit BEAR WARNING signs...head for the river/stream...wait.

Who needs a guide?

Heck, Mooseman would prolly do it for a mere couple of grand
